stage win for the "contrabandista pastel" Betancur?

He'll be scanning the roadbook for one where you can win your weight in cheese.

Go back a month or so and this would've been pie in the sky.

I'll give Betancur a little credit for going out front rather forlornly in LBL for all of... 17 seconds*. Don't know why he didn't pick a downhill section to kick off - all that momentum, geez !
*That's quite a career high of late.

He did it a few times at LBL, but was closed down.

    My man.

He's riding it now, because that way he might make it to the end at the same time as the rest.

(I'm fully aware that he's actually quite svelte and showing some sort of form now, and that this joke is two months out of date)

Anyone fancy a flutter on Hugo Houle to win?

Seen odds for him at 245,075/1.

    Hahaaa.

At those odds it would be worth putting £100 on him and then hiring someone to take out the whole of the rest of the peloton! :D

In ThomThom related news, sound the klaxon! Lars Bak is riding.
Everyone else may as well just pack up and go home.

    Worthy of a bump.

I was surprised at the odds on Chaves for this one, given his efforts at the Vuelta last year. Is this because of the amount of TT in the Giro this time around?

Hard to tell from the team selected by OGE, but are they looking for stage wins or does Chaves have any recognised protection for the MTFs?

He's going for GC. Plaza and Txurruka to help him.

    Pick the team to bits:

    Orica – GreenEdge
    CHAVES RUBIO Johan Esteban
BEWLEY Sam - 81kg's: Lead balloon
EWAN Caleb - Former track rider.
HEPBURN Michael - Another former track rider.
HOWSON Damien - Some TT credentials, not a climber
MEZGEC Luka - Very dotted career with some TT ability.
PLAZA MOLINA Ruben - Mountain goat
TUFT Svein - 'The Oldest tour rookie of the modern era', no spring chicken.
TXURRUKA Amets - Flighty 56kg bloke.

So he has only 2 Sherpa's. No ambitions of a high GC placing there?!

No not knocking him but is he going to be able to assist Chaves in a GC bid?

Yes, he is - but in subtle ways that only a canny DS would appreciate.
In the race, he'll provide an endless supply of Werthers Originals: at the dinner table, the faint smell of wee and endless stories of the olden days is a sure-fire way to get the youngsters off to bed early for maximum recovery.

Svein Tuft is old. but he's a monster on a bike, very strong rider even now. chaves didn't have much support at the Vuelta and still entertained and got a stage or 2. suspect that's what he'll do here. top 5 is probably about where he sits in this race based on everyone not having bad days.

Fantastic weather forecast for the whole of the time that the race is in the Netherlands.
More like mid-Summer than the freezing conditions of last week.

To be honest you only need loads of help in the mountains for mechanical reasons, unless you are one of the absolute favourites. If OGE are clever they will save Plaza and Txurruka until later in the race, for the second week Chaves can just sit in.

    Sky Team:

    Landa
    Nieve
    Lopez
    Roche
    Seb. Henao
    Knees
    Deignan
    Viviani
    Boswell

Not a bad team considering the injuries, illness and other issues they've had. Would have liked to have seen Swift going as a flat/hilly domestique with an eye on stages too tough for Viviani but not sure who'd you'd drop without weakening Landa's GC chances. Prob Viviani but given he's an Italian rider, in Italy with a very good chance of winning the proper sprints that would never happen.

Interesting team, will be keeping an eye on Boswell as I like him, and this is his chance to show his progression. Will this be Viviani's last road race before going to the track? I seem to remember some Brits doing that in 2012.

Matteo Tossato is starting his 33rd Grand Tour. 26 finishes so far.

He already has the record for most starts and is one behind Eduardo Chozas for most finishes.

I thought that the job of boring the youngsters off to bed would be the job for the Australian contingent. After all, boring people into submission comes naturally to them.
The conclusion therefore, is that Esteban probably refers to Svein as 'Daddy'.

No, I don't abhor any riders for their nationality. What a bizarre statement.
