Disk frame build - advice & shopping list
Hello all, Bit of a frame build novice and certainly my first time doing a disc build. Ideas & help much appreciated!
I have a Giant Defy Pro 0 frame lined up. apart from stem, bars & seat post I need to source 2nd hand or purchase everything else. Can you advise a shopping list?... some questions:
Groupset:
Considering mechanical Ultegra groupset (prices coming down nicely and high quality 2nd hand readily available) and hydraulic RS675 breaks, which I would need to buy new.
- What pieces and where to buy for the disc brakes?
- How to get a good deal on Ultegra 'group' when will not need levers & brakes, just need to buy mechs ets separately?
- Are some places selling 'disc' groupsets ready packaged?
- Are the disc brake mounts standardized if I wanted to go for SRAM Force/Red instead?
Wheelset:
Excuse the naivety, but are there any special considerations when buying a wheelset for use with discs?
Preference is to source a good 2nd hand pair
Final question, if any thoughts... is this all a bit too much trouble and should I fold & buy a new bike?
My preference & budget has always been to buy 2nd hand and source better wheels/parts; but happy to fold if it simple doesn't make much sense. My budget is around €2,500/£1800 and the frameset is already £600
Due to some lack of experience on discs etc, I imagine I will have a few hours workshop costs @ local bikeshop to factor in finishing.
Thanks for your thoughts & suggested shopping lists folks!

Merlin offer an Ultegra Disc Groupset package for £620
https://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-ultegra-6800-disc-brake-groupset-83417.html
However you'll need to calculate if it would be better to buy a standard 6800 groupset, buy the hydraulic shifters/brakes separately and sell off the shifters and calipers from your standard groupset.
Tweeks have the standard on offer at £390 and I reckon you could sell off the calipers and shifters for maybe around £120 or thereabouts. Cheapest hydraulic shifters/brakes I've found is Merlin at £300
https://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-st-rs685-hydraulic-disc-brake-stis-br-rs685-disc-brakes-75654.html?utm_campaign=googlebase-GB&utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=shopping&utm_term=Road+Bike+Gear+Levers&ucpo=23772&gclid=CjwKEAiA8K20BRDetNv3p6DNhXwSJADSwa3tNNFuyGbKpmrCmUgPd4GMIq-PdmClaFzsQ8M3FOKbsBoCwYHw_wcB
So a quick calculation suggests that buying the standard group + separate hydraulics would be marginally cheaper but you still have the uncertainty factor of how much you would get for the parts you sell off.
Regarding wheels there are several price points with good options at each. A well reviewed basic option are the Mavic Aksium One Disc at £145

More expensive are the Hunt 4 Seasons Disc

Thanks Arlowood!
Merlin wasn't on my radar and that disc gruppo would save the hassle.
Like the look of those Hunt wheels as well0 -
Are you set on Ultegra rather than 105. I've ridden both and 105 is excellent and well priced.
Chainset £68 chain reaction cycles (crc)
Fr der. £17 crc
Rear der £23 crc
RS685 £300 merlin cycles (they were as low as £250 over Xmas).
Cassette £23 crc
Chain £13 crc
Prolite evo disc wheels £147 Ribble cycles (these wheels are approx 1650g and not over 2200g as listed by ribble)
So with the frame that adds up to under £1200 leaving plenty left over for other items such as tyres, pedals, saddle, BB, bar tape...could also buy some tools to build it yourself. Plenty of instructions on youtube to follow and enjoyable in my opinion .If you had your heart set on ultegra then you'd probably need to add another £100-150 but still well under £1800 budget.
Good luck0 -
Just an update on the pro lite revo wheels I mentioned in last post. The wheels from Ribble are not proline revo a21. I checked with Ribble as was going to get a pair. Thought the price was too good to be true.0
