Swapped my Avids for XT, used new rotors and adapters, I ditched the conical washers from the front but kept them on the back.......anything wrong before I head out on a ride??
I have my old brakes for sale if anyone is interested, for some reason I can't post in the classifieds?

I didn't keep them on the rear, the new Shimano bracket came with these conical washers. I believe it's because the caliper doesn't mount parallel to the adaptor so the bolts won't tighten properly???0 -
Take them off.
Make sure the bolts're sufficiently short yet long enough.
If I take them off then the bolts won't sit flat against the adaptor and won't tighten up properly???0 -
So you need shorter bolts. I hacksawed a bit off mine. Comes with its perils though. Stupid PM has the threads in the frame and hacking a bit off means you mess with the bolt thread and it doesn't engage as well.
Perhaps best leave as is for now until you get the correct length bolts.0 -

All seems ok, pads centred nicely on rotor, probably just a leave it as it all went together well which is usually a good sign!0 -

Even with the correct sized bolts they still won't tighten down properly without the conical washers as the mounting surfaces are angled. Conical washers came with the Shimano adaptor so I'm inclined to keep them0 -
Shimano do use conical washers with the 180mm disc along with longer bolts (check tech docs if you don't believe it) Or they do for the front.
You do have a front adaptor on the rear but a quick google search doesn't show a rear post to post adaptor for 180mm plus it looks ok anyway0 -
I think you're right, the mount does put the caliper at an angle so the bolt head will not sit square to the mount. Looks horrible, but if they came with that mount that must be why. I've only used front adaptors on post mount and not had to use those washers on Shimano.
edit: just seen Antm's post. My front 180mm adaptor doesn't use washers, but I got an XTR one as it was the same price from CRC.0 -
Superstar 180mm PM/PM adaptor with conical washers that came with it (I think). Either way, the surface is angled and needs them.0

My front 203mm adaptor doesn't use conical washers, doesn't look like it needs them. The rear adaptor was labelled up as a front one but shop said that was ok.

Cheers, front looks fine, rear maybe 1.5mm too far in, is it just a case of adding shims (washers) between the caliper and mount to move it??0 -

Correct. I added washers to push caliper out to take 185mm rotor as in my last post image.0 -
Take a look after riding it. Make sure you don't push the caliper too far out so the pads overhang the disc. A touch too far in is not an issue so long as the pads don't foul on anything.0

Do you mean the plastic bolt retainers for the caliper bolts?
If so on my windowsill, I only received 2 with the brakes, am still deciding the best place to put them or whether to even use them at all as I've never seen them used before, and as I've threadlocked the bolts they shouldn't come out. None of my previous Avid brakes have had bolt retainers.0 -
I've never used them. But you need to have the correct bolt head to use them.0

Those bolt heads with the teeth are right for them, but considering they are designed to hold onto a flat edge I wouldn't bother. They won't hold anything on those round washers so threadlock makes more sense.
Leave them on your window sill or teach yourself to flick them at your colleagues.0 -
Went for ride at Hadleigh Bike Park with the new brakes, boy they are savage!! Kinda prefer my Avids as they seemed a lot easier to control the braking on long steep descents but suppose just need to get used to the XTs. Aligned pads by fitting spacers (washers) between rear posts and adaptor and filing a couple of mm off the front adaptor, thanks for all your help
