I do both road and MTB.

Don't rule out road bikes if your just cycling around town. I find them much more efficient and easier. My MTB must be almost double the weight of one of my road bikes and there is noticeable rolling resistance in the MTB tyres. Quiet country backroads that are free of traffic can be really enjoyable on a road bike too. It's just a matter of finding the right route. Other potential options are a cyclocross or hybrid?

Mountain bikes may require more effort for the above reasons, but that's not nessesarily bad if you are wanting to burn off the calories!
