I know everyone gets bored of the normal high end wheel questions so to liven your day up, which would you go for:

http://www.halfords.com/cycling/cycling ... ilver#tab1

http://www.decathlon.co.uk/700-road-bik ... 31621.html

The best bit is Halford's: "Just to top it off, the rims are compatible with rim brakes for top-notch braking."

Anyone been unlucky enough to own either of these?

Anyone who has ridden a bike in the past 20 years will have used wheels similar to these. They do the job they are meant to.
What point were you trying to make again?
  • No particular point. I've just decided to eek out another six months from my 14 year old commuter and need a cheap as possible front wheel. At that price I'm not expecting much but if either of them is so badly built/sealed that it's a false economy then I thought I'd ask.

R501s are around £60 a set so might not be worth penny pinching?

The cheaper Shimano wheels are very good indeed, and I would be tempted to go with them, but the above wheels will be a good alternative; lots of spokes, easy to true up, heavy but reasonably strong.

The £30 wheel from Halfords may be completely fine but I'd rather spend the extra £20 and get something I know is going to be good an R500 wheels have a good reputation.

Just bought these myself after procrastination over what to get for a good few months. What swayed it was how cheap they are including tyre and tubes. Adding all these together would cost about the same as the two options given (albeit you only want 1 wheel). Also means I can easily put my bike on the turbo trainer without changing tyres etc...

Not bad for £103 and the same as the Aksium elites; the only difference being an arguably inferior tyre (which can easily be changed if they really are bad).
  • Gone for a set of R501s. Anyone want the rear for £35?

I was about to say I think I have a very basic front wheel, bolt on, you can have in exchange for beer. Collection only. Compatible with rim brakes for some braking. I would need to check it's a front though.
