  • Week 14 is done! Really happy with how i felt this week. Looking forward to a test race this weekend!

  • My 4 hour race on the weekend turned into a 10 min ride followed by a DNF!

    Rookie errors! Mechanicals. Drama!

  • Here's the video of the weekends failed race! Sorry about the swearing at the end!

I'd hate that - psyching myself up for a 4hr and being forced to pull out !

I'm picking up a new chainset today to get something with crank arms a better match for my height and more appropriate gearing. Hope to hell the cassette isn't worn or I'll have the same thing.

Are you changing the chain? Or just the chainset? If you're doing the chain I don't fancy your chances.

Hard luck OP, lesson learnt - always go and find a steep hill and put in some really hard efforts in all the fears with a new chain. Most people will naturally use a couple of sprockets, so some can be fine and some can be absolutely wrecked!

i've decided to do all 3 now. It's a 9 spd chainset but should work with 8spd chain and cassette. I'd initially thought i had to go 9spd throughout, but that means replacing the shifter, and i've hacked some triathalon bars onto my mtb which makes that akward. The bars only just accommodate the shifter/brake combo levers i have now. All in all too much head scratching to contemplate in one day.

Yeah, such a stupid mistake really. Waiting for all the new components to arrive (hopefully by the weekend), so I won't make the same error this time around.

I reckon I'll be changing my cassette every time I do the chain now.

Do you have more than one bike then? Was under the impression that the ATB was unserviceable?
  • I've got three bikes that I use regularly!

My MTB is a 2012 Giant Anthem 29er, then I've got a road bike (2013 Fuji Altamira 1.1) and I've got my commuter (2008 SE Lager).

The last component for the MTB arrived yesterday afternoon and it's now fully functional! Took it for a test ride and everything is fine. I'm going to try and get out on the trails for a short ride Friday.
  • I've had a busy few days! Took the last minute decision to bleed my brakes, having never done it before!

Again, if you are interested in seeing how I'm going during the race, please follow me @G_B_Musketeer on Twitter. Regular updates and pics from my crew! And your chance to critique or encourage! ;)

In a team of 5 you'll be riding each lap much harder than I will. Maybe it will hurt more? :D

It's 4:45am on the morning of the race and I can't sleep! I'm watching pro cycling on YouTube, jut trying to relax.

Thanks for the Twitter follow! Feel free to send some motivational stuff at 5am local tomorrow!

And thanks everyone for taking the time to follow this thread or read my blog. Every time anyone has taken the time to write a message or read a post it has meant a great deal to me and it has been a big part of keeping me motivated throughout this process.

    Thanks again!

Great report GBM, and well done on your 7th place finish! Sounds really tough going, over 5,000 meters climbing!

Thanks! I'm very satisfied with the result! Couldn't have done it without everyone's support! I was ready to give up a number of times!

And I was happy with the results of my training. My legs were strong for the whole race, it was he mental side of things and general fatigue that ended up being the biggest challenges.
  • I'm back on the bike!
