Tubeless tyre recommendations

After building up some wheels with Archetype rims I'm thinking about going tubeless and i'm after some recommendations of fast rolling 23mm tyres. The main one i've been looking at is the Schwalbe one as they seem to be a decent price on bikediscount.de.
Also is the Stans kit the best for going tubeless or are there alternatives??

Not many options if you want to go tubeless, but Schwalbe offers a great tyre.

I wouldn't go for the kit. Some tubeless valves (if you have old inner tubes just cut the valves out), stans yellow tape and latex is enough.
  • Thanks for the reply JoostG, i'll get some 25mm yellow tape and the schwalbe's and give it a go

    Archetypes tape up no problem.

    My advice:

3M crossweave tape - see ebay. Much, much cheaper than stans
    Stans 35 or 40mm valves
Schwalbe One tyres, or Bonty R3s. Both good.
Go 25mm if you can. Better in every way to 23s.

You'll need 21mm yellow tape for Archetypes.

Why would they be? The concept that you need a tiny tyre to go fast is as ancient as downtube shifters. In those days you could buy 18 mm tubular tyres, with a section not much bigger than a squeeze of toothpaste. They were lethal. 19-21 was the norm. Then 22-23 became the standard and nobody became slower. Now 25 is becoming the norm and nobody goes slower. At a guess up to 30 mm there is no disadvantage and with a bit of engineering even larger tyres can be made to go just as fast

  • Thanks for the replies all. I've found some Schwalbe one 25mm tyres slightly cheaper than the 23's so will go for them

  • Here's the link, the postage is just under a fiver but it still works out cheaper than anywhere else I've seen

I have 31mm road tyres on one bike and I am no slower on those than I am on narower tyres. I suppose there is a small increase in aerodynamic drag but it will only be noticeable on TT and is in the order of seconds over 40km or so. I don't consider that to be a problem when I am not competing.

Cheers, just ordered a pair of 25mm tyres!

19mm 3M crossweave tape works fine. Just run two or three layers and clean the rim thoroughly beforehand.

  • When you get the 25s onto the archetypes. would you mind measuring up to see how wide they actually come to? I am interested, but tight on clearance.

    Thanks,
    Paul.

    Paul,

I can let you know dimension of a 25mm tubeless 'one' on archetype, from memory it was 27-28mm
  • Thanks

  • Well that was a bit of a faff, got some cross weave tape and got the rims taped up and tyres on ok but getting them to seal was a right pain. After a couple of days of finding them with 20 psi in them they're now holding pressure. They do look great and feel great to ride though!

It's all much easier with tubeless rims. My HED + stay rock solid even with no sealant in

25 mm schwable one on the archetype measure up at 25mm however on the pacenti sl23 they measure 284mm. Odd that.

What's even more odd, is that 25mm tubeless Ones measure 26.0 - 26.1mm wide on my SL23s.

I think I may have the 23mm tyres labelled up as 25 mm

Just checked the 23mm tubeless Ones on my Archetypes and they're bang on 24mm wide.
