Currently looking for a replacement for my Genesis Equilibrium 725 and thinking of a Bob Jackson Club Audax 631 or 853. In its standard 631 build the Jackson is reasonably priced, when you start doing upgrades things get out of control.

I don't know if its worth spending the extra on the 853 and I'm concerned about stepping back to 631 from the Equilibriums 725. Is 725 lower than 631, they seem by the Reynolds badge to be in a different series / range of tubes.

There's probably not much practical difference that you will notice. The different tubesets are described here:

On the face of it, 631 appears to be higher up the order than 725...

Do yourself a favour and try to get a 2014 Equilibrium Disc frame and forks. It's 631 and mine was cheap as chips.

£385 from Paul Milne Cycles bbbbbargain!!!!!!

853 and 631 are the same underlying alloy, 853 is heat treated to make it harder, so it better resists dents and impacts.Consequently, you can build a bit lighter in 853 as the impact resistance means you can draw a thinner tube wall, but you're talking pretty small weight differences in the context of the whole bike.

It might be more cost effective for you to put the frame cost saving towards a lighter wheelset. As far as I can make out it's £180 more for 853? Pounds per gram other things may get you a better overall result for the same budget.
