Bike Build Component Selection/Compatibility

Have secured a rather nice Genesis Equilibrium frameset that I plan to build up as a Christmas present for my grandson (13 years old).

He has an aging mountain bike that is now too small for him. He is a bit conservative in his outlook so I'm planning to build the Equilibrium as a flat bar bike so that the transition from the MTB won't freak him out too much.

Have managed to identify suitable shifters (Tiagra 4600 or R780), brake levers and calipers etc. I was planning to build it up around a 2 x 10 speed set-up but perhaps use 46/36 (Shimano CX50) crankset married to an 11-32 cassette at the rear.

This should hopefully allow some flexibility initally as he gets used to the slightly higher gearing vs what was on his MTB. I can always substitute a compact chaiset at a later date if need be.

I know I will have to source a medium cage (GS) rear derailleur but I'm worried about the 11-32 cassette. Can I use what is effectively an MTB cassette - the SLS/SL HG-81-10 or perhaps one of the SRAM cassettes XG1080 or PG1050.

Just assembling the bits ATM and would appreciate advice on this before purchase.

  • You need a medium cage mech - you have one and any 10 speed chain will work. KMC 10-93 is the best choice I think.
11-32 cassette will be fine but what about the 12-30T tiagra cassette. A CX chainset is a good idea and short reach STI I forget the code number though. R780 might be these.

Yes I've done a bit of checking and it looks like the Tiagra 4600 and the Shimano R780 flat bar shifters will be compatible with 4600, 5700 and 6700 front and rear derailleurs.

I did consider a Tiagra 12-30 but thought going to a 32 as the lowest cog would give him that little bit extra.

From what you say then this:-

    or this:-

would be OK despite that fact that they are ostensibly MTB cassettes. I'm guessing that as long as the derailleur has the capacity and the chain is 10-speed compatible then they will work OK hopefully
