Just a quick question about whether I need a new bottom bracket.
About to purchase a Shimano 105 Compact chainset to replace the stock one that came on my Allez. My current bottom bracket is one of these: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-un26-square-taper-bottom-bracket/rp-prod34652.
Do I need to purchase a Shimano 105 bottom bracket (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-105-5700-bottom-bracket-cup-set/) as well?
Many thanks.

Yes, you'll need a hollowtech II BB. Doesnt have to be 105, you can either pay less (and buy 4600) or more (6800, etc)0

I have the 105 5700 compact myself and I use the 105 10 speed chain and 105 5700 hollowtech II bottom bracket which is just £9.99 delivered from CRC, and you can fit it and forget it without ever worrying about creaking or dry bearings like you get with bb30.This serious internet site..............I serious cat0

Thanks very much. How easy a job is it to swap out the old bottom bracket and chainset and put the new ones on? Any specialist tools required?0 -
Its a pretty easy job. I got my lbs to remove the square taper cranks and BB. I didnt want to buy the relevant tools as they'd only get used once. If you plan on doing it, you'll need a crank puller and the the appropriate BB removal socket/wrench.
Fitting hollowtech II is super easy. All you need:
5mm allen key
one of these http://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-tlf ... 57089.html
and http://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-tlf ... 44480.html
or
alternatively one of these http://www.merlincycles.com/icetoolz-ho ... 44746.html
EDIT:
in case you want to remove the square taper yourself, you'll need:
http://www.merlincycles.com/icetoolz-cr ... 44501.html
and
http://www.merlincycles.com/shimano-tl- ... 44486.html I'm 99% certain this is the correct socket. You'll need a ratchet/breaker bar.
Iirc, my lbs charged me £10 to remove the cranks and BB.0 -
Ok, thanks for the help!0
