And that's why you pop a manual or at least shift your weight back as you enter a puddle.
I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.

Pain hurts much less if its topped off with beating your mates to top of a climb.

The road actually looks marginally worse than Kent roads.

I did exactly that in December 2013 on an unlit country road in the dark (I was using quite powerful lights as well). Didn't know anything about it but must have gone right over the bars and broke my clavicle and elbow.

The thing was I saw the puddle but just caught the edge and must have slipped into the abyss. The hole, as it turned out was about 1m across and 125mm deep.

If only it had been about 124mm deep you'd have been fine!

I'm not sure what you mean by that. The deepest part of the hole (measured next day by a friend as I was in hospital) was at the edge where I went in. My point is you can't assume that a pothole is a regular "crater" shape with the deepest part in the middle. If it's full of water you could be at most danger just clipping the edge as I did.

My driving instructor told me to never drive through water as you don't know what's under it or how deep it is.

Seems fair, there is a nice short 12-15% climb near us with a ford at the bottom, I avoid it in winter and in summer it's usually deep enough to get your feet wet at the bottom of the pedal stroke, a few weeks ago I came across a bloke who'd hit an obstacle, punctured and failed to unclip before hitting the deck. When I saw him he was soaking wet, bleeding from his head and waiting for a lift home.
