Hi, I have a Garmin 500 and I live in the south of England, but work in the north of England. Consequently I commute between these two locations.
I therefore have two bikes, one in the south one in the north and I use my Garmin Edge 500 in both locations.

After a ride in either location I download the ride to Garmin Connect and usually delete the ride on the unit.

However occasionally but getting more frequently I have noticed on the map the Garmin shows a red line as a direct line between my location in the south and the north, and then a detailed map of my most recent ride.
Also the date of the latest ride is always the date of my last ride, when this happens.

Am I not turning it off correctly ? It feels as though I am leaving the unit on standby !!

I usually just turn the unit off with the button on the top left hand corner, but it is as if when I turn it back on it thinks my starting point is where I turned it off.

I am not loosing data and the distance between the north and south is not being recorded, just this red line between my locations.
Very strange and a bit annoying

Do you hold the lap button to reset when you finish a ride, before you switch the garmin off?

I have the same a 500 and all I do after a ride is stop the timer and turn it off. If I need to ride again without downloading rides I just press the reset button to set it to start a new ride, the rides then all download fine.

I am guessing you wait until it has found satellites and give the normal display before setting off.
  • You have to tell the Garmin that you have finished the ride before uploading it. You need to press and hold the reset/lap button.

At the end of the ride I just save the ride and turn it off no probs. Never had an issue with it and have often done 2 rides in one day, you need to read the instructions again.
