I've always worn boxer shorts under bib shorts when out and about on the bike.

A guy at work mentioned he tried it without any underwear at all the other day and said it made a huge difference to having no chaffing on the inside of his thighs etc.

This never really occurred to me.....

Do you guys have specific underwear when you ride, if any at all??

I only wear Assos underwear with bib shorts.

I'm left handed, if that matters.

No wonder he looks so cheerful :)

To the OP for short rides it doesn't really matter but for any real distance wearing underwear will cut you to ribbons. I did this recently on a long ride and couldn't work out where the pain was coming from until I realised I had left my boxers on.

Only noobs wear anything under their bibs.
    Red bikes are the fastest.

    None.

But, as you start to ride longer distances - you will find which works best for you. Just give no-underwear a chance.
  • No underwear is so comfy! I couldn't believe it when I first started out cycling with proper gear that it would make such a big difference to comfort, but wow!

I thought bibs were just long stylish undies? Wearing something underneath would be equivalent to double-bagging. That said I know a few 24hr riders that wear bibs under their skinsuits, but that's more to due with the generally rubbish padding in skinsuits.

Im probably one of the few who prefers undies. I will double pad on anything over 10 hours though, though they tend to be MTB rides than road. I'm riding 6 days a week at the moment, I'd need at least another 2 pairs of bibs (currently have 3) if I went commando.

Something in that maths doesn't quite add up to me!

So you are happy to wear the same shorts 3 times a week at present? What sort of underwear do you use that sweat doesn't get through to the shorts?

  • Have you not herd of sticking them on the washing line for half an hour when you get home

30 min quick wash vs hot wash is what I mean. They wear out quick enough as it is. I'm just saying not every road cyclist goes comando. There seems to be a view that if you wear undies you'll end up with under carriage torn to shreds. I agree that it is generally accepted to be better to go commando - I just don't.
  • I would never go out on a ride with any underwear again. The only exception to the rule on this is my short commutes to and from work. Go commando with plenty of Assos chamois cream applied (I prefer mostly direct to the pad and a little on my sit bones) and I can ride for hours with no worries whatsoever. I don't know why I didn't do it sooner.
