Shimano 6800 rear cassette 'wobbles' from side to side

Hi all

I have a new bike that I am really pleased with-it's almost perfect and very quick. I am, however, experiencing teething troubles shifting into lower gears-in short they don't hold their position that easily. I have been down to lbs and they've fiddled with barrel adjusters and so on which has been some help but this has not alleviated the problem.

When looking at the cassette carefully it wobbles from side to side when being spun. The movement is quite pronounced and all the bolts and lock rings are sufficiently torqued and so forth.

My defy advanced, on the other hand, does not do this at all and shifting through the apex gearing is secure in comparison to ultegra 6800.

I can only deduce that this may be down to the rear wheel being 'slightly out' (very technical, I know) but that is admittedly a bit of a punt on my behalf.

I'd be grateful therefore if anyone else can pass on the benefit of their experience please and what might be causing this wobble in the rear cassette.

Thanks in advance,

KBMack

The rear cassette wobble sounds like the freehub bearings are shot (assuming there's not a manufacturing fault with the cassette itself).

Does it rattle in your hand if you try and wobble it?

What you've suggested above is a bent axle because if it was out if true it would just run on the piss all the time.

Missing a spacer? before pronouncing doom on an innocent before guilty hub

Thanks very much everyone. I guess the rear wheels I'm comparing are not like for like. On the bike equipped with ultegra 6800 the wheels are vision team 30-standard supply I suppose-whilst on the giant they are pslr1 which are vastly better. I have some shimano rs 81's on order for the new bike so when I get the change done this may alleviate the issue?

Ordinarily, would a cassette wobble cause gear slips?

    Thanks again.

Not unless it's really bad. Gear slips usually indicate a worn chain and or cassette. This does lend some credence to the shot free hub bearing theory. What sort of mileage does the kit have on it and have you checked the chain with a checker?

its probably a spacer if its anything like i have experienced. despite my LBS saying otherwise (they said don't put the 1mm spacer in when you are running 6800). it has gone away since i installed the 1mm spacer.

Took my 6800 apart recently to clean and degrease and had the same problem in the last 3 cogs.

Basically when I rebuilt it making sure all the spines were correct on the freehub and all the spacers were in place it was fine. I actualy think I d cross threaded and over torqued the lock ring.
