Garmin virtual partner?

When you set up a course on your Garmin, on subsequent rides what are you competing against with the virtual partner? Is it the time you set on your first go at the course? Is it the fastest course ride to date? The last go? Ideally I'd like to be able to compete against my fastest time.

If you create a route using an online route planner like ridewithGPS, then the virtual partner (VP) can only be used as a pacing aid against an average speed, that you set. I think the default is 15mph.

If you recorded that ride, you could then create a new course (within the Garmin itself) from that ride data. The VP for this will be your actual performance from the first ride.

You can also download gpx data from Strava etc, and ride against other people, virtually, using the VP in this way.

I've been using this technique recently - it works really well on my Edge 800. Thanks for that guide - really helpful.

Was well chuffed on Sunday when I rode against the same 85 miles I did a couple of weeks before and beat it by about ten minutes. I reckon I'm pretty much ready for the Ride London :)
