Cycling has turned me into a weird driver!

Well, my wife thinks I have lost the plot....

Whenever I am in the passenger seat I can't help shouting out 'HOLE' and pointing to it.
This usually results in her jumping and stating 'what's the matter with you these days?!' :P

Then EVERY TIME I see a cyclist I shout out 'CYCLIST' which is really annoying my kids.

I can't stop thinking 'umm, this would be a nice climb', 'umm, what a smooth road', 'Ah, I have cycled this way' or 'Ah, I should come cycling this way'.

I give cyclists a massive wide berth and smile at them - quite sad really. They are probably thinking what a strange git I am but its like I am part of a national secret cycling club like the freemasons!
And just in case they missed my smile I have two big British Cycing stickers on the back window.

OK, its not all bad. I am not completely mad. I have yet to shout out 'Stopping!' or 'Car back!' though I have ducked my head down a bit to be more aero despite being in a Toyota Yaris.

On the rare occasion I take the car to work, I'm constantly pacing myself against where I would be on the bike. Its only 5 minutes quicker by car

I recognise some of these symptoms in myself, but fortunately not all :)

Haven't got to the stage of shouting out loud yet
  • God I'm so glad to read it's not just me!
  • Lets hope this spreads to all hobby cyclists and the roads become a safer place
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

Just don't confuse the car pedals with the bike pedals.

My wife keeps telling me to hurry up and urges me to pass cyclists, I tell her they'll only have to re-pass at the traffic queue ahead. That tend to annoy her a bit. It did backfire on me when we saw someone cycling on the M4 though.

A colleague told me I should tell her that she makes me wear a crash helmet because of drivers like her. I think it might be best if I don't mention that.

I definitely drive differently, more towards the centre of the road, however, this has only happened the once: I overtook a bike, somewhere up the road I glanced in my rear view mirror to see him in the distance and my first thought was 'wow, dropped him pretty easily.'

I now tend to bore my wife with utter meaningless (to her) drivel about my bike rides instead of work.

'Ah, the marketing manager was in a right strop today and the air con was playing up again'

    has turned into:

'Hit a bad pothole today, just missed my best time up Bar Hatch by two bloody seconds and I think my seat it just too far forward by about an inch and have you seen my calves, wow'

This is me on every single hill i drive up or down. I was even trying to convince the OH we should move to Sevenoaks as they had some lovely climbs when we were driving through on Sunday

    Ha, yeah.
Location decision now comes in this order:

    1. Is it great for cycling
    2. Work
    3. Kids schools.

    :)
