Garmin 800 - how do I view HR whilst on a ride

I have raed the manuel and followed a number of posts on forums and this seems to be a common problem, so forgive my ignorance. Just got a garmin 800 mostly for the HR monitor so I can view zones whilst riding.
How do I view my heart rate on the training page? I have been through bike settings and have the "workout timer enabled" but when I go back to home screen i can't find the page...
