Are you interested in steel frames?

... then maybe you can help me out.

A few months ago as part of my college course some of you helped me out with some market research on bike shops which was really useful.

I've been given a new assigment on my course and because I'm mainly interested in handmade frames I've chosen to do some market research on the handbuilt frame market. It would be great if you could complete my quick survey. It's all for my college course so none of the data will be published or anything.

Just done it. Only thing I struggled with was whether I would buy one in the next 12 mths - my answer was"no" because I've just taken delivery of one
  • No worries. Thanks for doing my survey. I'm up to about 80 respondents so far but I really need to get to at least 100.

so if you haven't done the survey and you are interested in steel frames, it would be great if you fill in the survey. Only takes a few minutes.

81 responses now. I have the same issue with the survey. I have no intension of buying a new handbuilt frame in the next 12 months, I already have three steel framed bikes, so I've answered the rest of the survey as if I was.

    Just completed it.

You know that Favori and Ellis Briggs are essentially the same entity ? Ellis Briggs used the Favori name to appeal to younger riders in the 80s to compete with the popularity of Italian frames. Had a nice SLX version in red !

You've picked a very small list of framebuilders.

You've compeltely ignored MTBs (which arguably are a larger segment of the steel frame market than road is).

ALL frames are handmade, bar possibly the cheapest BSOs. Do you mean bespoke, one offs, or are you including batch stuff like Cotic and Genesis (if you're including Coindor, presumably so)? Or does it just have to be fabricated by a grumby b@st@rd in a shed with an unrealistic wait time and an oversized price tag to count as "handmade"?

    Done Tony.

Actually looking into this at the moment for the n+1, so quite relevant to me. Good luck with the assignment.

Completed your survey, hope this helps out. Not sure if being in the states skews your results, but I am looking into a British steel frame right now.
Lets just got for a ride, the heck with all this stuff...
  • Thanks for your comments I am deliberately just looking at the road market. I know I've missed a lot of builders out but there is an opportunity to add them in the survey. I don't want to comment too much as I don't want to skew any results. Thanks to everyone who's shared they're opinion so far.

    Cheers

I've done it now as well. I did it as if I actually had money to spend, but i'm poor.

Completed for you. I do like steel frames and I am considering another. Maybe a tourer

My health doesn't really justify a new frame/bike, but a lotto win would mean I could buy one even if I hardly used it - so I've done the Survey on a "Maybe" basis!

Why just UK framebuilders on the list?
  • Just because I was surveying British frame builders. However there is an opportunity to add others if you want.

Done. MTBs aren't completely missing, I have a Dave Yates MTB. And no, I'm not minted. I bought it with my first student loan in about 1991 :) .
