Riding mate been knocked off....

We was out riding yesterday, went out into the countryside and had a lovely steady ride racking up 40 mile...
So on our way back home having to pass through the busier town roads we was riding along and to the left of us there was shops that you can pull into...
So pedalling along and next minute a car decides to overtake us and then immediatley pull straight left into the shops takin out my mate who was in front!!
Obviously fuming a few words was said yet the driver of the car just got out and went into the shop leaving his mum to do all the talking. She was telling us her lad had only been passed 5 days and he had done what he was told to do blah blah blah. She was apologising and saying she would pay for whatever damage had been done to the bike..
Rear derailleur damaged, handlebars damaged, brake/gear levers damaged... I will be taking the bike to lbs to get everything else checked out. I told her that it will be going through the insurance and she said no dont do that as he only been passed 5 days..
My mate had a gash to his elbow, hip and also a big knock to his shoulder which is sore..
Also the shop had cctv which shows exactly what happened which he gave us a copy of..
All in all this is another do we feel safe riding on the road??!!
There is too many car drivers out there that do know give enough repsect for bike users on the road

Go through insurance.Red bikes are the fastest.0

That's appalling.
Not the story, just your grammar. "We was out riding"
The fact the driver just ignored you suggests he is either too ignorant of other traffic or just doesn't care. Either way he shouldn't be on the road. If he has just passed his test he is still in a probation period and can easily have his license revoked. If he cannot drive properly, no matter if he passed a test or not, he should face the consequences. I would seek all compensation through his insurance and if it makes his premiums rocket, tough on him. Next time it could be a serious injury or even a fatality.0 -
Agree about going through - just because he 'was only following orders' doesn't mean he should get away without it being recorded0
-
Ignore what the lady wants, as she should have not told her kid to cross over cyclists like that. If she is really worried about not having claims on her kids insurance, thus saving her money, she needs to learn to hold back an extra 5 seconds and wait for things to clear.
The only other thing I will say is the world is full of idiots and low lifes, don't let something like this take the enjoyment out of cycling!0 -
What did she mean by "he was only doing what he'd been told to do"? Told by who, her or his driving instructor? If the later then I fear for all of our safety.0
-
She was saying her lad had been doing as he had been taught and that was exactly my reply "if thats the case i fear for all of our safety"0

I haven't put my story on here for my grammar to be scrutinized..
Whats more appalling is thats the first thing you say after reading about someone being knocked of their bike!!0 -
report it to police - get an incident report form
take pics of all injuries/damage
record factual statements of events from victim and witnesses now (before you forget)
get quote for all repairs from lbs
give copy to culprit, 5 working days to pay, no negotiation on cost
any messing around, get a no win no fee company involved (see ads in cycling weekly) and let them do it for youmy bike - faster than god's and twice as shiny0 -
^ what he said*
Give them a chance to pay up promptly, if they don't bite your hand off to make amends, let the no win, no fee guys go to town on them!
*appart from the fact this guy went into the shop, so may deserve paying a higher price for his mistake.
Was he even insured to drive the car?
Think I would have called the police as he walked away.0 -
The police were called and we went into local police station to report it where we was told they would be contacted.
The police officer rang the culprit and told them to come into the police station with driving license and insurance documents0 -
RTA + injury = police mandatory attendance? or have I missed something here?0

Blimey! Do you realise how patronising that comes across? I'm puzzled as to why you would post as you did, the guy is only doing what so many others have done on this forum. Maybe he should have said he'd damaged a wheel and was looking for advice on a replacement. I'd expect better from a mod.0 -

Thankyou!!0 -
Did not read the bit properly about him being injured.
Was going to say fake a slight injury just to have a reason to get the police there as he walked away.
Did you find out if he was insured?0 -
Doesn't matter if they passed yesterday or 50 years ago - you will always get some idiot.
On Friday I had the classic overtake to turn left driver. Knew exactly what he was going to do and had to slow down hard to let him turn.0 -
The driver needs punched. In the face.0
-
On reflection - No.
The mum has let her kid wander off to the Shop after he has knocked someone over and then she makes excuses for his actions.
It's the mum that needs punched. In the face.0 -
The kid will get away Scott (Scot?) free. Sounds like his mummy will just pay for everything and he'll carry on being a danger to everyone.Bianchi Intenso Athena

I can't believe that a reputable driving instructor would teach a pupil to drive like that, or did she teach him to drive! More likely that Mummy said pull over I want to go into that shop and Boyo blindly followed her instruction without Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre.
If he had only passed his test 5 days ago then he is dangerous as he has forgotten the basics and should have his licence revoked. Surely counts as driving without due care and attention and requires a fine and points on his licence then back to driving school? Makes me wonder how these idiots pass the driving test in the first place.0 -

I doubt any driving instructor will let a pupil drive like that. They are assessed regularly too, however its up to the pupil when they want to put in for the test. It was probably mummy teaching him and he fluked the pass.... or he blindly followed a instruction to pull over.
I would have had a word with the kid... big time.0 -
That was always my take on any injury caused in an RTA.
Mr Plod to be notified and deal with at scene.
FWIW.
