Tough/CX 650 tyre

Wondering if I can put some tougher tyres on my son's Triban 3 that has 650 wheels so he can go on trails as well as the road. Not sure what the maximum tyre size is that will fit. Any ideas for a 650 tyre of decent width and with some tread?

You will struggle to find any 650c tyre suitable for off road - been there, done that. There's a useful list of tyres available in 650/571 - might be worth a look, but nothing on there really seems properly off-road capable...
