When were bib shorts introduced? Were they around in the earlier days of cycling, or are they a recent introduction?

Not sure of the precise date they were 'introduced' - but they been around since at least the 1970s...probably earlier...

I think it was on Thursday.
Science adjusts it’s beliefs based on what’s observed.
Faith is the denial of observation so that Belief can be preserved

There's a well known photo of Merckx, still wearing braces, dated 1969 - probably he'd have had bibs if they'd been available. When did lycra come in? - bibshorts need to be stretchy to fit a range of riders, which is probably harder to achieve with older fabrics like wool.

AFAIK they came in with lycra shorts in the 1980's - probably Assos or Castelli. Can't remember anyone BITD with wooly bib shorts, but we did use clip-on braces.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Were not around when I was a lad. Only razor blade saddles and an arse of steel required. Them were the days...

    I think late 80s.

Early 80s it was still braces - that would ping off and take your eye out if you tried to have them too tight.
    Thats why they invented Oakleys...
