If I rode on gatorskins then swapped over to gp4000 ?

I have always used gators right from the off, I'm sure they would puncture less than 4000's but what ride qualities would I notice in the 4000's favour to justify the extra expense , faster wear rate and more punctures ?

I used to have Gatorskins on the Condor and GP4000S on the Rourke. The GP4000S are a much nicer ride, and loads more grip. They lasted 3,000 miles before I changed them, they'd gone a bit square but had more wear in them.

Whether you'll get more punctures really depends on the roads you're cycling on and the amount of cr@p on them. Michelin Pro4 Service Course are very similar to GP4000S in all respects, but I think just a better made and slightly nicer tyre.

If you want something in the middle, try GP 4 Seasons.

I'm not into racing so I wonder if 4000's would even be worth my while.I'm more into fast pace longer rides and would like a plusher ride and tyres I can have total faith in when whizzing round a tight corner in a pack.P puncture resistance is obviously important to me too as the gators are king in this respect.

All I will add is that I've had no issuses with either the GP4000S or Pro4 SC in terms of punctures. Sure I've had one or two punctures in 4000 miles but one was from a metal staple that would have gone through anything.

Gatorskins are rubbish. May as well ride wooden wheels and the puncture protection isn't that good. As the good doc says, if you want a good compromise then GP 4 Seasons.

This is exactly how I would describe them

I ride Gatorskins on my training bike and have no issues with them. Their grip has always been fine and puncture protection is the best I've experienced.

I find PR4's start to puncture quite a lot once you've put a few miles on them. So much so that I now only use them for racing, and take them off afterwards - nothing worse than puncturing in a race.

I prefer to ride slightly cheaper tyres and replace them more often, than buy expensive ones ride them once they are past their best.

On my 4th pair of Pro Race 4. Over 3000 miles on the last 3 sets with 4 combined punctures in over 10k miles. Both my Gatorskins punctured in under 200 miles (plus they're heavy with rubbish grip and ride like ass).

It's far from scientific proof, but I actually experienced fewer punctures when I switched from Gatorskins to GP4000s's. Much nicer ride too.
