Fitting an Evoc bike bag in a Focus (etc) sized hatch

Off on hols soon and I'm taking my bike on the plane. I don't have a bike bag/box at this stage so I am trying to figure out the best way of doing this based off dimensions.

My favoured case is the Evoc bike bag. My plan is to fold all the seats down in a Focus (or equivalent) size hire car and then shove the bag to the side of the car where the single seat folds down, then put the bag upright. Then put the other 2 seats next to it upright so people can sit in them. Rest of the luggage in the boot, footwells etc, kids on the back seats looking after the bike - job done!

However, I can see from measurements this is likely to be a little tight! Anyone experience trying something similar?

  • Hi,
I've only ever laid my bike down flat in the back of my '08 Focus. I'm not familiar with the EVOC bike bag, but if you remove the wheels to get it into the bag you 'should' be able to sit it upright. Couple of things to note though. You will need to leave the rear seat base down so that the rear passengers can still sit in the back. That will mean that the seatback that you're lowering will rise up quite a bit towards the front of the car. Also, I'm not sure that dropping the single seatback will leave you enough room to slide the bike bag into the gap.
If you wanted I could measure the space tonight?

Not sure if it's the same size, but my Dad had to put the mine into his Focus estate lying down when he took it down for storage in France for me. The bag was the PX Aerus one

I dont think you'll be able to get a bike bag into the gap left by one rear seat.
It will be too tall - certainly my fabric bag is with the bike in.

You could leave the bike bag at left luggage and then the bike would be a lot smaller.
Or hire a bigger - taller or longer car ?

I agree with the pessimists here: I have a C-Max and don't think I could get my hardshell case (which might be slightly larger than the Evoc, but not by much) into a single seat gap.

At Nice, we got a Fiat 500, and JUST managed to fit my EVOC bike bag in, but was just me and my wife and hardly any other bags.

I can stand up 3 bikes in the back of my Megane.

Got to slam the seatposts or remove entirely depending on frame size.

Worst comes to worst just leave a kid at the airport.

bernithbiker - did you have the Evoc "standing up" in the Fiat?

I've measured our Civic and it seems doable - but reasonably tight. Thing is, you never know quite what car there will give you at the airport, so it could be Focus, Megane, Astra, whatever and I guess it will be more difficult in some cars than other.

The cost hike was huge to a bigger car to hire, but regretting now slightly. However, the bike is a somewhat unwelcome passenger anyway!

Meh - if its a family holiday it might be wise to leave the bike at home.

Then you can go on a proper bike camp in Majorca or somewhere with like minded people ! :-)

Travelling with a bike is a bit of a pain in the bum. Where are you off to ? You could hire abroad ?

It was kind of rammed in at any angle that would work; I think my wife had to keep her head down! Fortunately it wasn't far to the house.

Before you get your contract ask the desk person what choice of cars they have; often they don't care and will give you a choice.

Also remember that split rear seats may not be standard on all models in all countries!

Oh ye of little faith. Provided with pathetically small Hyundai i30, fitted in bike in bag, luggage, wife + kids.
