Garmin file types

I want to load a route onto my 800 that has proper turn by turn instructions. I think this means I need a TCX as opposed to a GPX file.
Is this correct? I do not have Garmin maps installed. I have the free ones downloaded from the web.
If my assumption is correct, does anyone have a TCX for Ride London 100 they could email me?
Yes, I know that on the day I just follow the crowd. This is for a pre event recce.
Thanks.

GPX gives you turn by turn directions and is the only one I use.Eddy Merckx EMX-3

I have an Edge 500 and need to use tcx files for the turn-by-turn. If you head to ridewithgps.com you can either plot out the route and then export to tcx or I think you can import gpx and export it as a tcx.0

If you have maps installed, then use GPX files.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0

As long as you have a routable map, gpx should work fine I believe. TCX has more bells and whistles since all the diections are part of the file - it doesn't have to rely on the devices map. TCX files are somewhat bigger that gpx in size.WyndyMilla Massive Attack | Rourke 953 | Condor Italia 531 Pro | Boardman CX Pro | DT Swiss RR440 Tubeless Wheels

Pretty much sums it up. I always use TCX files with my Edge.
Now I have an Edge 1000 though I've started to plot my routes in Garmin Connect and use it to send the files to the 1000. I do this as routes created in other sites be they GPX or TCX will not result in Segments on the 1000 working. This must be because the Connect sends the course file to the 1000 it includes details of the Segments that you will be riding over.0
