Despite the name, modern creams are designed to go on the skin. Applying it to the pad is not necessary.

So, I've been wondering. Is chafing something that just happens to some people? I've had no issues at all in cheap bibs over 100+ mile rides. I am a hairy dude so maybe it's a natural defence against chafing? (Evolution, b*tch!)

I never chaffed much (hairy dude as well), but when I use cream, on longer rides, I don't seem to get as much butt ache, as when I don't. May well be psychosomatic!!

Personally go for the apply to skin approach.

Directly to the skin, particularly if it's gonna rain

I wear it on long rides only, but only cos I bought a pot of it and so it seems silly not to use it. I was on the Exmoor Beauty earlier this year and rode for a bit behind a guy with a large amount of what appeared to be soapy suds emitting from his undercarriage. The thought of being hit in the face by his frothy butt cheese made me gag a little so I backed off. Do certain brands foam up in wet conditions?

Never seen any cream that foams up. I'd do whatever it takes to get in front of anyone who has foaming shorts.

Depends on how long the ride is. Any less than a few hours then directly to skin. If it's going to be an all dayer then I'll apply some to the pad the night before to let it soak in before applying some more directly to skin just before the ride.
Never put off until tomorrow something that you can do today. 'Cause if you do it today, and like it, the you can do it again tomorrow!!

I use Udderly and its always to the skin not pad. I have however recently bought 2 pots, 1 for home and 1 work. 1 is nice and thick the way I like it but the other is runny like double cream and its a pain to use. I find it a bit random the consistencies are different!
