*Yes speeling / grammer is rubbish - 1 handed typing... on my non dominant hand!
Just to give some back ground, I'm 32 and the 2014 season I’m in (was) pretty good form, I've started road racing this year and am 3 points away from 2nd cat. Put it this way, I didn’t finish my last race, some silly 4th cat rider couldn't keep his line and collided with me. Although I shouldn't' of been 10poeple back from the front at this stage of the race anyway. So I hit the deck at 30+mph and landing on my spine and cracked several ribs and shattered clavicle. Surprisingly the ribs didn't hurt and still don’t, only proof there broken is via x-ray. The collarbone is a long and painful story.
In short I came off 31st may and I had an operation on the 10th June, so im 3 weeks post op.
I have movement out of the sling and no longer on painkillers... all sounds good but by god im so pissed off.
Enough of the me 'im damaged and pissed off', lucky to be typing I guess, could have been more serious...
One of the reasons im hacked off (see rude word) is that I race in a local team in which I have to ride a certain brand of bike. As I was coming close to cat2 and was a certainty, in my mind anyway. I purchased a Madone 5.9 frame set costing £1500, this was to stop me racing on my trek 2.1 winter hack....2 weeks later the top tube has cracked due to the handlebar smashing it.
BC insurance - Thistle insurance - the brokers are refusing to cover it - although I updated the policy when I purchased it, THEY argue that I only updated the renewal policy which came to effect 3rd June. You can see why im annoyed as it’s only a few days. Plus Im sure i updated the policy as checked the website to confirm.
The bike was written off by the bike shop for the insured amount of £3.5k - cost of a new trek Madone at the same spec I was riding. Full duraace etc etc. Although im technically only out of pocket by 2k - frameset and wheels. I say ‘only’ trust me I don’t have this to spend… AT ALL!
Hence why im very annoyed.
So, that's the background, missing out all the gruesome details how the lovely NHS left me at home for 10days with a bone almost sticking out of my shoulder on painkillers. "Thanks for that" private insurance here we come!
I need help with a few options:
1 - Give up racing and ride my Van Nic (full di2) lovely bike, like I used too and enjoy my riding. But what else is there other than racing? - sportives? ummm done that been there no thanks. Triathlons? Done a middle distance open water - only enjoyed the ride, and running buggers up my knees. Fitness is very important to me - im obsessed.
2. Bin the Trek 5.9 frame set and continue to race on the 2.1 and put it all down to bad experience and learning that money doesn't make you faster. Or does it, is my Trek 2.1 good enough to race? Feels sluggish & heavy - Its full 105 so slightly different to spec and can use my race wheels. - ffwrd f4r
3. Get the Trek 5.9 repaired, I’ve been quoted £320 by http://www.carboncyclerepairs.co.uk fully painted so will probably look like new. And only put the 105 stuff from the Trek 2.1 (winter/turbo)
Safe?
This means that I have no winter bike or turbo bike - although the Van nic isn’t going to melt in the winter and can swap components to save the Dura ace.
4. Keep the Van Nic as my nice bike / summer training and use the Trek 2.1 for racing and winter and turbo. This is the cheapest option, so makes sense.
5. Or finally same as option 4 but get the trek 5.9 repaired and sell it, would anyone buy a 2014 Madone 5.9 frameset repaired for £500+? Retail cost £1800
So much crap in my head right now, Cant make any discisions. All i 100% know is to keep my Van Nic bike. I love riding it.

Get it repaired. Keep racing!
As an aside, why does your team force you to ride Trek bikes if you have to buy the damn thing yourself at full price? Seems like a bum deal to me.0 -
Only race what you can replace.
DA won't make you any faster than ultegra or even 105.
Personally I'd go for the repair.0 -
+1 for getting the frame repaired. I wouldn't stop the efforts to get the insurance to come through since you say their website shows you having done what was required. That is too good a ride to push it aside without a fight, even though you are down right now from everything that has happened to you lately.
Sorry about your shunt and the injuries, don't push recovery too fast, trust me on this. Complications from recurrences, or re-injury, are frequently worse than the original injury  . I'd hate to see you punt on racing as you were progressing nicely by your account, where there is the will to continue you'll regret not sticking with racing, in the long run. When the physicians say you can return use the Van Nic to train and regain your fitness.
Remember what Confucius once said 8) , its better to be pissed off than be pissed on :roll:Lets just got for a ride, the heck with all this stuff...0 -
Cheers! Words of wisdom!
As for the insurance - still pushing them.
Yes I will get the frame repaired and stick all my 105 stuff back on it and get racing.
Hopefully get back on the road in 3 weeks.... Im on the turbo trainer all ready with arm in sling
This means I have 3 road bikes.... i know n+1 but thats bordering on the silly.Ritchey Road Logic - Focus Izalco Chrono Max 1.0 TT0 -
N=1 as heresy, balderdash! :? Surely you jest, sir (I know, stop calling you Shirley  .) Kudos on not pitching in and on easing back in smartly. Best wishes on everything.Lets just got for a ride, the heck with all this stuff...0

E/1/2 is much safer, although still crashes. Get your points and don't ride with 4ths again!0

My experience of insurance companies is that, apart from where cars are concerned, their initial default is to deny. Keep at them. If you signed up ahead of the crash you signed up ahead of the crash. It's that simple and should be easy enough to verify by the transaction.
Repair well and good luck!0 -

Sounds like a shit sponsorship deal at your team.
They make you ride Trek's but you have to buy them yourselves.0 -
Its one of those group discount teams....the manager gets a free bike if he can get 10 people to buy a Trek....oh and the same apply's to shoes, helmets, clothes, and ipads.....needed to review er training data!0

Sounds like a pyramid scheme. Might have to form a team for a new bike.0 -
Another vote for getting it repaired but then sell it and buy a cyclocross bike.
More fun than road racing and a lot less chance of injury if you come a cropper (soft landing).
Being self employed, road racing for me is a big no no.0 -
Ask them to provide evidence of the date you changed the policy online
When I had an issue with them, they asked their IT to look at when I had logged in and what actions I had performed. they even knew when I had entered a value in a box and not saved it I seem to recall. This ended with me being proved right and them agreeing to pay the claim.
If you made a change before the crash, and they say you didn't, as them to look at your online log ins and prove you didn't2020 Reilly Spectre - raw titanium
