Recall on Orbea Avant

I bought an Orbea Avant MD10 in May and received an e-mail from the supplier yesterday that there is a recall as they have found that there is a possibility that a crack can develop in the fork of certain Avant model bicycles with hydraulic disc brake. I have been told not to use the bike. After contacting Orbea this morning I was told that they hope to have the new fork in three weeks, but aren't sure. I bought the bike in the UK but live in Switzerland.

I wanted to know if anyone else who owns an Avant has received this or if anyone knows what ones rights are when it comes to a problem such as this? At this point I would like to get a refund so I can an other bike in the next week and not miss the best part of the summer!

Have just spoken to my LBS today, and been told the same thing. My partner and I both have Avants, purchased in the UK, although we are currently in the Pyrenees enjoying an extended holiday until September. Orbea only supplied the frames as they were unable to supply the M10d models to our timescales, however the bikes are built with 11spd Ultegra Di2 and Shimano disc brakes.

I don't have any detail yet, as we only found this out by accident, but like you are not best pleased at the prospect of being without a bike for a number of weeks.

That is a shame, the avant looks like a nice bike, a perfect winter bike with discs. FIngers crossed that all is well once the forks get swapped.
    Red bikes are the fastest.

Have now spoken to Orbea and apparently the issue is internal cracks at the crown of the fork caused presumably by twisting forces from disc brakes. Can't use the bikes in case fork breaks.

They said they would need to find the closest French dealer but since we are only a couple of hours from their factory in Spain we suggested going to them. Come on Wednesday they said. Wednesday 30th! So over two weeks on holiday in the Pyrenees without a bike. Have asked Orbea what they intend to do about this. Not happy at all.

Tarax - did you get anywhere with getting your money back?
  • Important to note that this only relates to Avant's with Hydraulic brakes not mechanical discs. I have the M30D and they've said that there's no issue as long as I don't change to hydraulics, but that they will give me a new fork anyway if I really want one. I do and so am waiting to hear back from them to find out what the options are.
