810 set up for Wiggle sportive with ferry crossings

I'm taking part in the Wiggle Wight sportive on Saturday and am wondering how best to set up my 810. There is a ride for 10 miles then a wait for the ferry, ride around the Isle of Wight then another wait and ferry crossing. Wiggle stop their clocks whilst you wait and cross the sea but how should I set up my timing. If i leave it running will the GPS record the moving time whilst on the ferry?
I currently just start when beginning my rides and stop when finished but there is never normally a rest/stop time involved. I know it will record moving time separately when I download it but should I set up auto pause? alternatively if I press the stop/start button I assume it will record the ride as 3 chunks which is not really what I'm after.

I regularly use a ferry but don't have a great solution.
On the Garmin Edge 500, pressing stop/start continues the same activity (assuming you don't reset it) otherwise, as you say, it continues to record.
I know I would forget to press start again - It would be good if Strava automatically removed ferry rides.0 -
Can't you just turn the unit off when you get on the ferry.
Don't reset it and turn it back on when you start cycling again.
Press start after you get back on and It will then carry on from where you left it.
Pretty certain that's what I did with my 800, so would expect it to be same for 810.0 -
The Garmin will show two timings post ride; overall time and actual moving time without touching anything in the settings.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0

I rode down to the IoW the other week and caught the ferry over. I pressed stop on mine when I boarded and start when I disembarked. If you don't it will probably keep recording as I think the ferries all travel over 4mph which I think is the autopause speed default (the one from Lymington can only just be over that tho )0

I use the Tilbury ferry sometimes - a short crossing between Essex and Kent. On my 800 i simply press stop, get on the ferry and then start when i get off. The ride is recorded as all one event and when uploaded to Strava it has a moving time which it uses to calculates ave speed and then an overall time - the time from when the ride starts to when the ride finishes including any stops in between.
Even if the device is switched off the above is till the case.
When you upload on strava the time the garmin was off just shows as an "as the crow flies" straight line but doesnt effect any segments0 -
I'm glad someone has asked this question as I'm doing the epic ride on sunday and was wondering what to do with the garmin timings whilst on the ferry. TBH I might just leave mine on as I feel a bit short changed with the change of route as this was meant to be my first century ride, but now it's only 95, unless I include the ferry crossings ;-)Wilier Zero.7 Chorus0

Nothing to stop you riding past the finish and doing a loop around Thorley.0 -
As others have said, press pause/stop when you get to the ferry and start when you ride off again.
Maybe you want to put a big postit note on the Garmin when you board the ferry to remind you to start it again after!0 -

Indeed I could...might look a bit of a plonker though, like i'd gone off route...plus who's to say I'll be in a fit enough state to do that, the most i've ever done is 68 miles in one hit.Wilier Zero.7 Chorus0 -
take a turbo on the ferry and then you just keep ridingwww.conjunctivitis.com - a site for sore eyes0

Personally I would leave autopause off and let it track the ferry journey as I think that would be pretty cool. A lot of fuss for an average speed figure?0

Thanks for all your replies, think I will just leave it running as know I will forget to press start again.
il sole, I was looking for my first 100 of the year also so may just ride off for the last 5 miles once I have got my goodies.
When it was paid for it was 103 miles, the route is now written as 95 but the route map shows 101 so who knows???0 -
The route misses the best road on the island. Add a few miles by going to the Needles. If you are still strong try the last 400m climb to the cottages at the top. Over 20% in parts.
Either west, the last mile is traffic free with awesome views on the Solent entrance. And if you get to the top you see the sea on both sides.0 -
Will that work though? I know my 500 if you pause and then resume in another location it assume it took you however long the gap to travel that distance in a straight line. For example on a Sunday club ride if I get to the meet early and sit about for 15 minutes, then we chat for another 10 and set off and I forget to start my Garmin for about a mile, it assumes it took me 25 minutes to travel that mile, draws a straight line and destroys my average speed. On Strava at least. Presumably the same is true with a ferry.0

Hi Dippydog2, care to explain the extra little bit.
I have looked on Google Earth and can see a road that comes from Freshwater Bay that goes up Moon Hill, is this the one? Seems a shame to not only drive all that way to do a sportive then ride that kinda distance and miss out on something. If you could post up a little map with your proposed route on it that would be really helpful please0 -

Can't post a picture at the moment' but you are correct. A few hundred metres after Freshwater Bay the proposed route from Wiggle turns right. The turning is easy to spot as Orchard Stores are right in front of you. Don't take this turning. Keep going straight, up Moons Hill. Stay on this road and it becomes Alum Bay New Road. This goes all the way to the Needles Pleasure park. Stay on the road, the pleasure park will be to your right and follow the tarmac up the hill to the Old Battery. Just keep climbing. There is only one road going up and eventually the hard surface finishes at the top.
To return just retrace your route until you get back to where Alum Bay New road splits off to the right. Keep left and follow the B3322 and A3054 back to Yarmouth. Probably adds only a few more km but really worth doing it.
If you are into Strava there are segments for the whole climb and the last steep bit.0 -

Thanks for this, will see how I feel on the day as not done many long rides this year, mostly under 60 miles. I probably will as love chasing segments0
