Quick Garmin 510 question

Last week I managed to lose my Garmin 800. Annoying, to put it lightly. I'm looking to get something to replace it as soon as possible, and am now deciding between the 510, another 800, or the 810.

I did use the maps quite frequently on my 800, but usually following a course with preset waypoints. For this reason, I think I can live without the mapping function as I can still get the waypoints on the 510 and follow a breadcrumb trail. My question is does the elevation screen show the oncoming profile, or only what you've ridden so far?

I often take part in hill climb competitions and ride a lot of mountainous roads, and this was the screen I used a lot on the 800. Being able to see the oncoming profile was a bit benefit and if the 510 also does this, I think that's what I'll go for. I'm 99% sure it probably does, but haven't found anything specifically saying this is the case in the reviews/info I've found.

Thanks a lot.

This is the screen I'm talking about:

Yes it does do that. (Or at least mine seemed to the one time I tried it out!)
  • Providing you load a course, then the elevation screen does show what is coming up.

You can also adjust both axis of the elevation screen, (I have mine set at 0.50 mile horizontal, so shows a total of 2 miles along (1 mile you've done and 1 mile upcoming))

If you set an average speed for the course, you will also get two dots on the elevation graph, one where you are and one where the virtual partner is.

If you don't load a course, it just updates with what you have already done (obviously)
  • Thanks for the replies - I expected that was the case, but nice to have the clarification. 510 ordered!

Yes, this is how I had it set up on the 800. I also had 2 data fields at the top (vertical speed and HR zone) and I'm hoping the 510 will allow a similar setup. No biggie if it doesn't though.
