Added Velox rim tape, now tyre removal bloody difficult

Hi all. I recently replaced the cheap rim tape on my winter bike wheels with some standard Velox narrow road rim tape, following repeated punctures on the rim side of the tube.
Anyway all fine but then bought some new tyres and getting the old ones off was incredibly difficult, where previously it was as easy as you would expect.
Tape sits at the bottom of the rim, and does not run up the whole length of the side.
Hoping someone would help shed some light on this.
