I use those tabs that are used to clean false teeth. Fill with water, put a tab in, leave to stand for an hour or two.
Numerous girlfriends have been taken aback after finding the things in my bathroom :D

You could also buy the cold water sterilising tablets meant for babies bottles, I assume they are the same sort of thing.

And do you know what my wife would do with my water bottles.....?

In fact maybe that is how faecal matter gets on water bottles..

If you must wash your bottle a quick rinse with cillit bang does the job nicely.
Wifey once cleaned the kettle with it and forgot to tell me, sick as dog for two days....

I throw mine into the crowd when they are empty.
Why would you want to reuse them?
I throw mine under under any wheel suckers

based on experience, I wouldnt use a dishwasher as the temps make the plastic brittle over time and eventually just when you are out on a ride, pick the bottle up squeeze it and it shatters and dumps all the contents over you, so not only are you still thirsty, it also looks like youve missed out on a toilet stop too.

I generally just wash them along with the other washing up, but sometimes cant get rid of all the washing up liquid residue(even though I rinse them thoroughly) which can makes the water taste odd, and Im noticing some of the older bottles I have tend to leak abit now as well, so maybe the best course is use steriliser tablets and yeah every so often chuck them (responsibly they do biodegrade) and replace.

In which case wash them in the dishwasher. Keeps them more or less sterile.

I tend to lose them before I get the chance to chuck them or we end up with a collection of bottles and lids which don't match.

According to Camelbak their Podium bottles are completely dishwasher safe.http://www.camelbak.com/Sports-Recreation/Support/Product-Care.aspx

After two years with the two Podium bottles that I am rotating being washed each time one is used, and no enbrittlement at all, I'd not hesitate to use the dishwasher. Maybe using the top rack if your water temps are excessively high, or if you have any doubts.
Lets just got for a ride, the heck with all this stuff...

I bought a couple of Clean bottles on a lark. Kind of like them. Take the bottoms and tops off, into the dishwasher with it all, and presto, Clean bottles. Piece of cake.
