Hi folks,

Just bought a second hand set of zipp 404 clinchers with the aluminium brake surface. I have noticed there is a crack in the carbon bit of the wheel. Unfortunately it was hidden under a decal. My question, is the carbon structural or there for the aerodynamic. I can see there is a nipple where the spokes met the carbon but also with the rim tape removed I can see the spoke ending at the aluminium rim. Leading me to believe the aluminium rim is actually supporting it. Please say I'm right as I have no money left for a repair. Thanks

Shane

The zipp hybrid wheels are not a fairing so the spoke is attached to the carbon not the metal edge. Sorry, not what you wanted to hear.

No worries, hope you find a way to get it sorted. If you can't return the wheel maybe you could find a cheap second hand donor wheel on eBay just for the rim? It's the same rim as the current zipp 60 so you should be able to get an official replacement but the price might be interesting. Good luck!

Thought I found the ideal wheel as a doner on gumtree but ends up it's a tubular :(. Might try and sell the rear and front then for parts and bite the bullet and get a zipp 60 wheel set.

Why not contact Zipp and see if they can do anything?

They'll do something all right, they'll offer to sell you another extremely overpriced wheel set!

Worth getting the wheel rebuilt by eg Wheelsmith with the original hub and new rim/spokes?

Nope because Zipp's hubs are notoriously total balls, may as well build a new wheel from scratch with a decent hub.

Just been reading about Rail 52 wheels over on the cycling tips site. 404 alternates but cheaper

Was talking to wheelsmith and quoted me for rebuilding with a gigantex rim but prob work out better to have him build me a new front and rear.

I also contacted Zipp for the Craic. I told them I was the second owner and the wheels were 4 year old. They said bring it to a dealer and if the damage was caused by a known problem they'll repair under warranty. Thought that was dead on.
