Garmin Connect and Courses

If I'm doing a ride that I'm not familiar with I will sometimes use the "Courses" feature on my Garmin 500, creating the course via Garmin Connect. I did this yesterday, but things seem to have changed...
For some reason along with the course it also downloaded a bunch of extra "waypoints" for what looked liked restaurants or hotels and the 500 was showing me time/distance to those. Is there anyway to control this sort of thing either on the 500 or via Connect?
I know I can create the courses using other sites, but I quite like Garmin Connect and understand the oddities of the routing (which other sites also have) so would like to use that if I can control this waypoint feature. Not sure if this makes any difference or not but this was using the "new" Garmin Connect interface that was introduced fairly recently.
