Really waterproof jacket

Just got back from doing the C2C then Reivers Route, which was brilliant, although the weather was not the best.
There were a few grim times, up on the tops where I got a right royal soaking wearing my old Altura "waterproof" jacket. The sleeves in particular seemed to wet out very quickly, even though they have been recoated.
I have decided it's time to invest in a decent "water proof" jacket, not "water resistant", not "highly breathable" just very water proof, at least on the arms and shoulders. Pit zips would be great too. Even better if I could get away with wearing it off the bike, but that is not essential.
Any sensible recommendations, without rehashing all the "Water resistance versus breathability" stuff?
In my experience it is either one or the other. As soon as I get too hot, or the rain stops I take the jacket off again.
Cheers.

Not ridden in it - but planet X have a jacket thats about £60 in their range - its the black one that kind of looks like a gabba from the back - but its not lycra and has an orange patch on the shoulder. I'm using it round town and its been waterproof through torrential rain so far.

As long as it is quality Gore-Tex you should be fine. They have properly sealed seams and the zippers seal up as you close them. The other upside is it will not be very heavy and extremely hot which means you can manage your temperature better with a few layers below in cold weather. They come in various fittings and styles. I have a Gore one which I use for mountain biking.

Other than that a cheapo plastic mac would work but it will be very "boil in the bag", may leak at the zips and not be a very good fit. Check the sales out at the moment as there are some bargains about.

Goretex is the closest to waterproof that you'll get but however much you pay you'll still sweat like pig in one.
I'll recommend Gore Bikewear Goretex jackets, I've got the path that I think is a mtb jacket but I went down a size and it's a good race fit.
I've got to say that I don't wear it that much because if it's light rain or showers I'll wear a Sportful Hotpack that drys quickly and can pack up small, if it's pi55ing it down I won't go out.

    I have this one
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-cosmo-waterproof-jacket/

@ed it down for about 2 hours. I started off in the jacket as it had forecast rain and true to form the rain started after about an hours riding. Was out for over 4 hours in total. The jacket kept the rain out and it was better than I expected at not being boil in the bag. I was a little wet inside from sweating but not soaked like I would have been without it. For the price it was more than worth it and it folds up to a decent size to stick in a jersey pocket. Can't compare it to more expensive jackets though as it's the only one I have.
  • I bought the Endura flyte jacket a couple of months ago, have worn it in a couple of downpours and it seems to keep the rain out well.
