Got caught in torrential rain on todays ride and got the white sections on my new club shorts plastered in mud specks. I soaked it when got home then chucked it in the wash but a fair amount of the specks remain. Is there anything any of you use or is it something I'm just going to have to live with? Cheers

  • Don't wash, soak in cold water

If it's just mud why does your washing machine not wash it out? I put my white stuff in dirty all the time and it comes out clean.

Some mud stains worse than others. I've found rubbing hand soap (or a Vanish bar) into the fabric in the post-ride shower helps, followed by a standard wash. Over time, my white kit always ends up less white though - socks are the worst for this.

Sometimes the best option is to throw it away or designate it as dirty kit for dirty days! I've done various races in crap conditions this year, resulting in a lot of oversocks/socks just being disposed of or kept for future cruddy races. It's not ideal but if you do find a magic cure, let me know! There's a lot of oil on roads that seems to mix with the mud/water and make it impossible to get out.

  • Vanish bars are useful for the spotting. I think I shall avoid white kit in future. Just takes one puddle on an otherwise dry day to put you on tedious scrubbing duty.

Yep, I've got a base layer that tends to look grey - a regular wash with a cup of vinegar and it was sparkling again.
I'm left handed, if that matters.

Cold water soak first, putting stuff straight into a warm or hot wash just fixes staines. Having said that, one of my clubmates wears white Assos all winter and I have no idea how he keeps it clean!
