Planning for next year to go to France. Ideally, 3 or 4 of us, bikes on the car, take the tunnel or the ferry to Calais. Then drive to a destination that is not very far from Calais (maximum 5/6 hours drive). Setup camp (camping or B&B, not decided yet) and then spend the next 3 days cycling between 60 to 70 miles. We want some nice quiet roads, not crazy climbs but "normal" climbing is ok and desired. And some very nice scenery would be a bonus. Any ideas/suggestions. Thanks

Well 5-6 hours from Calais could take you quite a long way as the roads are pretty good. You could get to the Loire region. Plenty of nice cycle routes around there.

    Limousin or Auvergne

Empty roads, lots of up and down riding but no killer mountains.

Not long back from a five day ride, and it was excellent!

At a bit over 6 hours you'd get into the Alps 8)

Not sure I am cut for climbing "real mountains" just yet, though it is on my list of things to do before i die. If this tour is a success then yes, definitely would do the Alps one year. I don't want it to become also a rush holiday, more of a relaxed cycling/eating/drinking one :D
