Canyon Bike - Selecting Size

Was tonight ordering the canyon Ultimate Cf Slx from their website. Was planning on getting a medium (56) and went through their online sizing and it recomended me buy an extra small (50). I have an image of me looking like a clown on a circus bike so I obviously didn't go ahead till I looked into it further. I'm 5'8 (170cm) and weight 10st4 (66kg). Has anyone gone through their online process, did it come up as you expected as I like the look and spec of their bikes and I've read all the reviews but, with it being a factory outlet in Germany its not as easy to get a test ride.. Any advice on Canyon sizing or the above bike appreciated..

I didn't buy a Canyon but when looking for a new bike went through their sizing calc. It suggested an extra small to me (5ft 10 with 33inch inseam) Also threw up a few warnings that I was a freak of nature. Didn't buy a Canyon in the end.0

Hi Kurt
I'm in Ramsbottom, where abouts are you .. Thanks.. J0 -
You've mentioned your height and weight but their system is based on inseam, or used to be.
Anyway 56/medium at 5'8 sounds too big.0 -
I've just bought a Canyon CF SL, waiting for it too be delivered. I'm 5 ft 8 and went for the small as I think the Medium (56) will be too big.0

For what it's worth, I'm 172cm and I have ridden both XS and S, I would go for the XS with a longer stem but it depends on your inseam and saddle to bar drop. With saddle set at correct height for me on the S, there was not enough exposed seatpost to be aesthetically pleasing, plus I wouldn't have been able to get required saddle to bar drop
This is the XS I test rode with saddle at my height (68cm top of saddle to centre BB). If I had bought it I would have put a 110mm or 120mm stem on it and cut the steerer right down
This is what I ended up with, a 49cm Scott. I had saved up for the Ultimate CF SLX frameset when the Westbrooks deal was on.

Hi, i'm based in Ellesmere port down by Chester. About an hrs drive from Ramsbottom.
No Problem if you wanna pop down but like the others have posted, i should think the Small would be about right.
ps, my inseam is 29"ish0 -

is that a carbon fibre dork disk?0 -
As far as I can tell the Canyon calculator is based almost entirely on inseam. Yours at 33" (838mm) is almost identical to mine which is somewhere between 835mm and 840mm. I am a little taller than you at 1.78m (5'10"). The calculator told me I should go for a M/56. I did also enter slightly smaller and larger inseam values and if i remember correctly I was considered just big enough for the M/56 and any smaller on the inseam they would suggest a S/53.
I also carefully measured my existing bike and test rode some others I was considering. I was able to compare the geometry of these with the Canyon geometry chart to get a good level of confidence in my choice. I decided the M/56 would indeed be the best fit.
I got the bike a few weeks ago and I seem to have gotten it right. The reach is about right with the 100mm stem, although I'm taller than you and like a forward saddle position. With the saddle at 750mm and all spacers left in (25mm) I think I have about 65mm of saddle to bar drop which is about what I'm used to. I may remove some spacers later and see how I get on. One thing to note is that the VCLS 2.0 saddle max insertion limit leaves a fair amount of post exposed. I'm within about 10mm of the limit at the moment and if I switched to a deeper saddle like the Adamo I'm considering I will be right on the limit. I don't think this is an issue if you stick with the default VCLS saddle. I could probably have gotten away with the S/53 frame too. It would leave me more flexibility on seat height but would give me a little more saddle to bar drop than ideal unless I flipped the stem. Reach would be too short on the S/53 with the default 90mm stem but with a 110mm stem it would be fine.
I'd suggest re-checking the Canyon calculator. If it's based on inseam as I think it is then you should have gotten a similar suggestion to me. You might get away with either M/56 or S/53 but being shorter than me it's likely the S/53 will be the best fit unless you like a long reach or want to limit the saddle to bar drop. (Incidentally, if you do want less drop and a shorter reach the new Endurance bike added to their range in the last few days might be worth a look)0 -
I'd say you need a small unless you have a very short body. I'm 5'9 and ride a small with a 120 or 130 stem. Mediums in canyon sizes feel too long for me.0

I'm similar dimensions to you and when i've looked at Canyon's (alot of the time!) i'd be going for a small with a bit longer stem (110mm probably).Cheers, Stu0

This isn't hard if you know your stack and reach imo ..0
