When you buy handle bar tape is it self adhesive/tacky as I need to repair a small rip in mine and I dont want to replace the whole lot as I've only had the bike since october ? TIA

It's a consumable, just replace it. Plenty clips on youtube to show how it's done

You'll probably make it look much worse if you try and replace just a bit, plus I'm not sure how you'll actually do it. As said, simplest thing would be to just replace it, perhaps by some nicer padded stuff so as to give your bike an upgrade at the same time.

It'll look rubbish and keep unravelling - replace the lot and teach yourself a useful skill.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

It's usually moderately sticky to help it stay in place, but it also relies on being tightly wound and secured at one end with proper adhesive tape and at the other by the bar end plug. A patch made from another piece of bar tape will probably just fall off. You could use a bit of electrical tape for a temporary fix, but I wouldn't bother - just replace, as above.

Plus nothing beats new bar tape, it'll make you go faster.

A second benefit is looking clean and sexy, which is just as important!
