Some surprise (to me) features:
1. You can design a route actually on the unit. So you add a point, then another (either by pointing on the map, or using an address/locaion/recent find etc) then when you're happy with your, say, 8 points just hit calculate and it joins them all together. It works really well.
2. The unit has Glonass support, but you can disable it to save battery. Turning on Glonass during my testing got the satellite accuracy to below 10ft (think it was 6ft).
3. If you tap the power button, the screen immediately completely turns off. At first I thought I was seeing a classic Garmin crash. But tap it again, and teh screen comes back on. I like this feature a lot. Sometimes I just feel like pootling along but still like to collect the data of where I've been but not be nagged to go faster by seeing the poor stats
4. Weather data is obtained by tapping the top edge of the screen, from here you can then read iphone notifications and weather etc
I've had many Garmin units. Starting from a 305 in March 2006, then a 705, then 800, then 810 and now the 1000. The biggest difference is the premium feel of the unit. It's a much higher build quality than the older units and the battery/sd card rubber doors fit much better.
Maps are managed by Garmin Express and is pretty straight forward.0 -
Ooooooooh, you must have one of the first in the UK.
Come on probikekit, where's mine?0 -

I believe PBK ship on the 19th, I could be wrong though!0 -
Anyone else received one yet? Really tempted to put an order in, but want to hear a bit more about people's experiences first!0

Pretty positive so far. Honestly, I know how new Garmins can be. This is the least buggy new release I've ever know. Navigation is excellent. Segments work as expected. I'm pretty pleased.0 -
How quick does the system run, I mean can you scroll round the maps etc quickly. All the 800s I've used have always been a bit slow.
I might get one when they are released in Taiwan as my 800 was way cheaper there.0 -

Wow, the first feature I've heard so for specific to the 1000 that I actually like! Presumably that would radically extend battery life?dodgy wrote:4. Weather data is obtained by tapping the top edge of the screen, from here you can then read iphone notifications and weather etc
Can't you just look up to find out what the weather is?Faster than a tent.......0 -

I expect the screen standby would have a positive effect on battery life, no idea by how much though.
The weather feature isn't a lot of use really, not because you can look up and see the weather, but most of the time the weather is up to an hour behind real time. It's handy to know wind direction, but I tend to be pretty well clued up on upcoming weather before I even head out.0 -

That's really the point - once you are on the bike you have committed your kit etc to the forecast weather; there's not much point in any further updates. A bit like spending too much time looking at the gradient profile screen as you ride - it's probably not going to make you feel any better!
It might be handy for touring if you have no alternative option for getting a forecast for the following days ride but then of course you can just change en route if the weather alters significantly on the ride.Faster than a tent.......0 -
Got mine this week. Excitedly set segments on several of my local climbs (it's a bit fiddly, but I guess you only need to do it once) - but the darn things (apart from one) won't upload. I send them to the divide, and some .FIT files appear ion the "new files" folder - but then when I disconnect it they don't do what they normally do and appear on the device - the files in new files have gone, but there's no segments.
Arse.0 -
I send devices by using send to device on the webpage, then they sync up with my Edge next time I sync with the Connect App.
Is that broadly what you're doing, or are you trying to manually put them in a folder?0 -
Segments have now appeared!!0

Evans had one for sale Thursday if anyone wants one, but my head unit only was still not in.
Had a quick look at it but did not turn it on.
Hopefully the lit screen will make it look better.
Looks great apart from small screen v large casing thing.
Anyone have a silicone case for it yet?0 -
I'm considering buying a 1000 for touring, but I have a few questions if anyone could answer them?
Can you plot a route on the fly? I.E. If I'm at Point A can I just 'highlight' point B on the garmin and it will create a suitable route? - not just reliant on Post code.
For the segments do I need to use a pre loaded course for them? Or will it tell them I'm approaching hill A and start a count down?
Cheers0 -
It's huge! Still can't beat the edge 500. It's like a Nokia 3310.0

you can put a number of points in and it calculates routes reasonably quickly. you can also change the distance.
its definitley a major step forward from the 800/810. i say that as someone who has had to return 2 810's in the last 6 weeks for warranty issues. when the 810 is returned to me, I'll be selling it.
also it comes preloaded with a full map of europe, and its detailed, and free. the navigation based on that is top notch. the only issue is with the uploads and syncing. it can be a bit hit and miss. also setting up wifi requires the unit initially to be plugged in! other than that though its very nice.0 -

Thanks for the reply! Looks like I'm going to go for it, if anything for the automatic route calculation on the fly - will be really handy.0 -
Although I am likely to chop my 800 in for a 1000, the 800 will also do routes on the fly. Simply use 'go to'.
Caution - the units may well send you down a dual carriageway, though. Just check the route before blindly following it.Boardman Elite SLR 9.2S

Do you need to know a specific post code for that? Chances are we'll have no specific location to go to, just aim for a campsite ~80 - 100 miles away from our current location.0 -
May upgrade my edge to one of the thousands of 810 going cheep on ebay0

How much can you get an 810 for? Just unit but with proper mapping.
I (like a lot of people I guess) already have sensors but would need maps.
The 1000 has proper mapping included, but its extra on the 810 isn't it?
Not sure I would buy one off ebay though.0 -

Isn't this just another gadget to play with before, during and after a ride?
personally I have the edge 200 and that is all I need.0 -

Yes. There you go, you are validated - feel better?0 -
I wasn't looking for validation.
I was simply expressing my opinion.0 -

You in denial again dhp?
Sounded like validation (again) to me.
See little point in comparing the 200 anyway. You could surely say the same thing about a Cateye couldn't you?
I do not mean to be rude. Am just reacting to people who certainly seem/are rude to people who want/own a 1000.
The 1000 is certainly attracting a lot of haters lol.
Were you as vocal when the 510/810 (or even earlier models) came out?0 -
Getting mine out of the box today.
I am not keen on its size and do not like the screen being a bit short (as I have always said) but expect it to shine in other areas.
If its cr4p, its cr4p, and I will be the first to admit/say it ;-)
I am not one of those people who says something is good because I have it, or cr4p because I don't 8)0 -
I see that the good news is that Garmin have produced a new out front mount for the 1000 that positions it really close to the front of the stem - that's good because it means it should be possible to see a bit of the road infront of the unit now!Faster than a tent.......0

You can install free maps on the 810, same maps essentially that are on the 1000. google 'talkytoaster garmin'.
How much for a Garmin 810? That's just a Google away, roughly £300 I think. I just sold mine on eBay with City Navigator maps, you can see prices for completed listings on there.0
