I wish they'd update the 500.... All I want is a 500 with wireless data transfer because the USB socket is usually the thing that makes the unit useless.... Can't upload any ride data from mine anymore :(

I'll replace with another 500 though, hopefully the price will go down a bit more with the 1000 being released ;)

    How do you charge it?

Currently it works fine as a cycle computer, if i want tracking i just have to use iphone app in my back pocket... The USB charging works fine, just always get "USB device not recognised" on any computer I've tried, and also tried many different USB cables. Charging works, just can't do data transfer.

I tried everything (I'm an embedded software engineer and work with similar electronics) - I got a hardware technician to take the USB socket off the board and we tried USB debugging it (soldered on a few cables to the USB pads), but had no response from the unit when it should have enumerated.

I think after many wet rides it just finally died; I can only conclude that corrosion of the PCB has shorted something required for USB data transfer; probably due to water ingress. Mine is 2 years old and was used on average 10 rides a week in all weathers (commuting), so had plenty of use from it, seems eventually after many wet/damp/foggy rides and many USB plug in's out's it's finally failed; hence a more reliable way to data transfer would be better....

I also have a forerunner 10 watch which is fully waterproof, I wish they took this choice with the 500 and supplied a charging/data transfer cable as they do with the watches to eliminate this issue!

Mine did that too. Have you tried a hard reset? That worked for me.

Have you tried the out of warranty replacement? (I know the answer ... it's just one option)

Is Di2 information one way only with the 1000?

I was thinking on the ride home, could you create an automatic bike? Pick a cadence range you want to ride at and let the 1000 and Di2 manage the gearing.

That would be rather simple to implement. But having thought of about it, it would be a pain when you stopped/slowed down or freewheeled.

This has been talked about for a couple of years but the lack of Di2 ANT+ codes was a problem.

Not sure if the transceiver is one way only but suspect so.

Other than for TT, I would see it as a gimmick but the over ride for zero cadence and stopping could easily be written. An ANT+ phone app could easily do the job and could even use GPS location and terrain maps for chainring selection.

Or you could change gear yourself.

    What?!

Next you'll be expecting me to steer ! That's not why I bought a GPS with mapping ...

Theoretically speaking this may be possible one day. Currently Shimano are only allowing people to read the gear info and not change it.

    Yeah, same here.

They’ve managed to squeeze ANT+, bluetooth and wifi chips into the tiny little Forerunner 620 so they should be able to do it easily with one of the smaller Edge computers. Given the developments in other Garmin products in the last year, the 510 and 810 seem more and more like a stop-gap for a successful product line that hadn’t had an update for a while.

The Edge 1000 is nice and bling and you can see why they’re targeting the prestigious ‘top-of-the-range-super-device’ market, but all I want is an Edge 500 sized device with wifi connectivity and decent battery life so I don’t have to keep plugging it in all the bloody time; full waterproofing would be nice too. They’d sell like hotcakes.

Edited to add: And wireless charging! Wireless charging should be in everything. I hate wires.
  • Well I'm glad this came out, saw the 810 today on Amazon for £212 with cadence and heart rate monitor, started off with 4 in stock from this seller, 5 minutes later I managed to get the last one!

    Great first post

    Bargain if its legit.
Not sure the 1000 coming out has much to do with it though.

Wiggle now reporting stock on 1st June. Wasn't it scheduled for May release?

Cheers, I think I had an account before this but I've changed emails a few times and I can't remember my account name...

I read in DC rainmakers blog that the Di2 gear indicator is there to support future development in auto gear changing which would be useful for TT riders. When used with a power meter and cadence sensor it would enable the garmin to instruct the di2 to change gear so the rider can keep working in a specific power range.

As most people have stated knowing what gear you are in is pretty pointless but the garmin knowing will be very useful.

Very entertaining thread - thanks eeryone. I'm was very confused - I didn't know we all had to buy these new devices! I'll become suitably outraged now.

TBH I'm non-plussed to upgrade from my 510 but there are many that say the 510 is pointless, except for me it was my first Garmin and I wanted livetracker so my wife knows where I am in case of emergency 9and to get the dinner on). There are doubtless some that see this as neccessary, some new comers who just want it and those that won't buy it.

Support for it will be interesting - the 510s (and I assume 810s) are buggy little things and the support forum is more of a group support network than anything proactive from Garmin to fix holes in the code.

Fascinating fact about how Strava got started :)

Hope I did not jinx you with my scepticism

Got an email that my 1000 was in but it was not in delivery and some sort of mistake.
Not in a rush TBH but looking forward to seeing it. Must order a case for my butterfingers!

Huge price, huge bulk of unit size - yuk! Gear indicator with Di2 a very obvious development though, strictly speaking, existing units ought to be able to work out what gear you are in if you have a cadence sensor.

People will be happy to use the Garmin segments if they can more easily be KOM! And there is a lot of potential for a new site to improve significantly on Strava.

Using a electronic device to work out what gear you are in is the equivalent of the NASA space pen. The problem has already been solved with bog standard Sora shifters.

While I agree a live display from Di2 on the Edge 1000 is a bit over the top, the NASA space pen thing (if you're meaning the Russians using a pencil) is a myth:

    http://www.snopes.com/business/genius/spacepen.asp

I quite like the look of the Edge 1000 mainly for the larger display, I have an Edge 800 which has been a reasonably good device but the screen feels too cramped for the navigation features particularly when used to a large spacious phone screen. £400 seems a lot when the Sony Z1 Compact is available sim free for a bit over £350 new which is weather sealed, has a decent screen and a few other handy features although I don't know of any good GPS software that's suitable for viewing while riding (like having a large high contrast display) and I don't find the phone GPS to be particularly accurate. I do agree with some of the earlier comments about Garmin devices being released before properly finished so will wait for feedback to see how well the device performs in practice as it may be worth holding on for a bit.

    Where from may I ask?

DCRainmaker is getting his Garmin 1000 early next week by the looks of it:
It's in the mail from my understanding, sounds like it hits my US forwarding address early next week, over in time for weekend.

Most brands now set very high RRP to allow retailers to sell them at "sale" prices and also to collect money from those prepared to pay the highest prices. Road biking especially is all about up selling minor changes for relatively large price increases

I just bought a standalone version online. Stock is very thin on the ground so far, most retailers predicting 18th May at the earliest.
