All I really want is to know is when I am approaching a Strava segment and the details of that segment. And that isn't included. Also I would have thought it is fairly simple to add in a hands-free facility so you can take calls, and read txts just like some Car sat-Navs do? taking a call hands free while on the move would be kinda call, unless I'm mid way through a Strava segment that is...WyndyMilla Massive Attack | Rourke 953 | Condor Italia 531 Pro | Boardman CX Pro | DT Swiss RR440 Tubeless Wheels

They have Garmin Connect though which will now no doubt get a facelift as they'll soon have their own segments that can be used on this device. It will be interesting to see how they can compete with Strava over the coming months if this is the road they're going down.0 -
You can do that with the iPhone app (and I think Android too). I think a lot of people will be rushing out to buy this Garmin and then sending it back after they realise the 'segments' are nothing to do with Strava.0

Boom, going to order one of those bad boys tomorrow then :P
Wife has pinched my Edge 500 (she just does not know it yet ) and was going to get an 810 as did not think the 1000 would be out so soon.
Guessing I only need the main unit as still have not used premium heart strap or cadence sensor from the 500 bundle.0 -
Huge price, huge bulk of unit size - yuk! Gear indicator with Di2 a very obvious development though, strictly speaking, existing units ought to be able to work out what gear you are in if you have a cadence sensor.
People will be happy to use the Garmin segments if they can more easily be KOM! And there is a lot of potential for a new site to improve significantly on Strava.Faster than a tent.......0 -
It's massive isn't it! Might as well strap an iPhone to your stem!
As for the segments thing, Garmin have a habit of trying to muscle in. Garmin OpenCaching for example trying to get in on Geocaching.0 -
I do like the Di2 indicator thing, i'd buy it just for that.
Admitedly my Specialized Allez didn't come with Di2 but that's a minor detail.

That's my thoughts too, too pricey and too big, my first smartphone had a smaller screen than that and wouldn't have wanted that on my handlebars!
So unless anyone wants to offer me 500 quid for my edge 500 for its ever increasing retroness I'll stick with that :-)www.conjunctivitis.com - a site for sore eyes0 -
Ridiculous size, just ride your bike more, leave stuff like this at home, or in the shop.http://www.fachwen.org

I'm going to wait for the next version that will take a SIM card, let you make phone calls and run out of juice halfway through a ride.0

The iEdge...?0

The battery life is down to 15 hours which isn't surprising. I'll stick with my wired Cateye Micro, I've only had to change the battery once in several years of use.0

I think so many people are going to diss this............then want one.............then get one.
The size is a worry though. Guess it depends on what it looks like in the flesh and what it does better than the 800 series options.
Wish they had called it Edge 1010. Edge 1000 seems like it will be updated after 3 months.0 -
Di2 gear indicator?! Are they just looking for random features to justify the price? Really, who needs a gear indicator, I know what gear I am in, I picked it and I am pedalling it. I don't feel the need to look at the gear stick in the car to know what gear I am in either0
-
As soon as they are £250 I will get one to replace my edge 5000

With Tiagra, I find I can already just look down to see what gear I'm in.
The only thing I hanker after with the 800, is Virtual Race Partner, or whatever it's called. I'd like to race myself against routes I've done before. Is the gorilla tired yet?0 -
It'll be 12 months of firmware updates before it actually works properly, judging by Garmins previous history, so I'll be waiting....0

Yeah the recent fiascos with the Edge 510/810s and Forerunner 220/620s really doesn't inspire confidence! It seems Garmin rush a lot of half finished products to market and try to fix them later.
I'm a big fan of the increased connectivity options, but they're taking a massive step backward with the short battery life. Either way, this is way too big for anyone with any self respect to put it on their bike!0 -

My favourite GPS unit (I've got several!) is my Bryton 20. It has the least functions of any of my units, it is smaller, simpler, takes much less time to recharge and seems to have a vastly long battery life.
Still, if you want your bike to look like a television set with a bike attached then the 1000 is the GPS unit for you!Faster than a tent.......0 -

I run a Cateye Micro too (iPhone in my back pocket for tracking), just the right size to give me speed, distance and time of day. tbh the only thing that's really useful is time of day, distance is good just to see how far you've been but it can also work against you when you've only done 10 miles but have another 50 to go. Speed is just of momentary curiosity and I could easily do without it. In fact there have been long periods when I've had problems e.g. losing my magnet and I haven't gotten around to fixing it.0 -
Yeah I love my little CatEye Strada, I use pretty much every function on there. The only issue I have is the big fat wireless sensor that (1) gets knocked out of place easily, (2) looks hideous and (3) is probably scratching my forks to hell underneath the cable ties. But otherwise I'm still impressed at the accuracy of it. It's very rarely more than 1 km off total distance or 0.1 kmph off average speed compared with GPS. It's quite impressive when you think it's counting tens of thousands of revolutions every ride, sometimes at a rate of >10 per second.
But back to the Edge 1000, I certainly like to see innovation but this is a step too far for me. I really just want to see wireless uploads and wireless charging come to their simpler units. I hate fiddling with cables. I don't understand why wireless charging hasn't caught on so much even in the smartphone market, it's a great idea!0 -
As I understand it wireless charging adds bulk and weight to a receiving device, so that's going to be a no-no for cycling!0

I love a gadget like the next person, but FFS does a cyclist need all these features on a smartphone size screen when there are so many distractions/dangers on the road? I run an 800 so that I can use the maps when I’m in a different part of the UK or country, but for the majority of the time it stays on one screen reading speed/distance/gradient/HR/cadence and I’m either watching the road/traffic, a back wheel or enjoying the countryside. I do not want an SMS alert, an ego flag…sorry a ‘segment’ flag, or a computer telling me what gear I’m in! No doubt they’ll put facebook on the next one.0
-
Too expensive and lots of features im not interested in.
I do however like the bigger size and higher res screen, the mapping on the 800 does get me squinting sometimes when im trying to find a road at speed, and ive occasionally taken the wrong one.
Hopefully they will do a budget version :P0 -

Gears display - isn't that just an evolution of Shimano Flight Deck? TBH It would be quite nice to have gear display on the screen - but I'd rather have it recorded in the GPX files and displayed in GC or Strava. Not that it's critical, but just a curiosity ...
SMS alert/call display - actually I'd find that useful. I don't usually get texts or calls - so having it display on the computer whilst riding would be helpful as I can't always hear it. It then gives you the choice of whether or not to answer (eg if the wife is calling it's likely to be urgent)
Segment flag - this would be the most helpful bit for me - I do like to chase segments and whilst you can do segments on the 800 it's only as a course and not ideal.
Fortunately different ppl want different things - otherwise there would be just one bike computer on the market and it would cost the earth.
Don't think I'll worry about an Edge1000 just yet though - give it time to iron out the problems and come down in price - not sure I like the size, but I'll have to wait to see one in the flesh ... perhaps they'll run some of the features out to the smaller units first0 -

I had my finger hovering over the button a few minutes ago. I was all set to press but the battery life is also my concern. With the Garmin units, if you are on the map page, the battery is around half the maximum. Whilst the higher resolution and bigger screen sound great, they don't sound great if the unit will struggle to record a full day out on the bike.
The segment real time feature is awesome, or it would be if it was linked to Strava. In trying to drag people away from Strava, Garmin have forgotten that Strava is so big because it is 'device blind'. Garmin should stick to hardware and let other people do the software. Garmin Connect is shocking proof of this.

Garmin Connect is a complete joke. I seriously hope they sort out the data graphs with the upcoming user-interface overhaul. At the moment, the autoscaling is a complete farce, the "zooming" tool doesn't work properly and (most importantly) it chops out some 80-90% of your datapoints, so if you zoom in you see 1 point maybe every 40-60s rather than the 3-6s your average GPX file contains.
You can see what the new design will look like for any activity by inserting "/modern" into the URL before the "/activity/xxxxxx" subdomain and it's all basically exactly the same with a smarter titlebar and background.
Garmin aren't winning me over at the moment, it could be awesome if they just did a few fundamental things properly!0
