Guys,

Just after a quick poll, how much for an average shop build if u have the parts and frame?
Just been quoted £70 - is this an average? Can't buy bits from shop as all second hand

Thanks

I'd say that's fair indeed. Depends on the starting point a bit. Bare frame and all parts in box, bars not taped? From there it's a couple hours work for someone being thorough and doing it properly.

I would say between £50 and £100, so your £70 sounds about right.

For a modern bike it' s a pretty good deal... with all the tedious routing of internal cables, press fit bearings... it's actually quite cheap.
If it was an old bike, different story, I can take into parts and reassemble a 1980 bike in the time it takes to fit the cables on a modern one

I would say £70 is a good deal, assuming they make a good job of it. All the various cables take quite a while to get right. Rourke Cycles charged me £60 for a complete build, but that's discounted I believe since it was for a custom made frame. Its not so much the mechanical build that takes so long, but the cables and bar tape - all the little things that really make a difference to the finish.

My LBS charges £50 for a 'bearing service' which was described to me as taking the bike completely apart, regreasing everything and putting it back together, I would imagine at least an hours work, which sounds decent to me.
  • My LBS says £100 on their website, when I enquired last year they said £200.

Mine charged £100 a few years ago but I did buy most of the bits on-line rather than with them.

£45 last summer for me in Bristol. I took them a big box full of stuff and they turned it into a bike.
