Navigation advice

Hi all,
I have so far refrained from getting a navigation system for my road bike, as previously I wasn't going on routes I didn't know. Now, however, I am venturing farther afield, and in the summer I will be staying with relatives in Italy, and I'll be taking the bike. Any advice on navigation tech? I have a speed/cadence/hrm device already, and would happily have two devices on my bike if I could save money on the navigation.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, especially for something with comes with European maps.
Percy.
