New left hand crank arm

My left pedal came off on my commute home. It became loose at 5 miles in, I had no way of tightening it, so kept pedalling. By the time I got home, 15 miles later, it just dropped off in my hand. The thread on the pedal was fine, but the thread in the crank arm was completely mangled, so I can't just thread the pedal back in. That means I need a new left hand crank, I'm a very poor mechanic, so what must I consider when getting a replacement? My current crank arm is a Truvativ 175mm.

There might be a fix (helicoil, retap) your LBS might be worth talking to. If you're not fussy about matching cranks then a trawl through ebay (or post a Wanted here) but it depends what kind of bottom bracket you have.
