Ah, but you've missed the point. Which is quicker, Centaur or Super Record?0 -
Red bikes go the fastest.0

So old school Dennis, everybody knows that "stealth" bikes are quicker now!!0

Poor man. Asks a simple question as is treated with derision.
I shall put a stake in the ground.
My £400 Dawes hybrid weighs about 15kg and has 38c tyres that are not very knobbly. My £2k Roubaix road bike weighs 8kg and has 25mm smooth tyres.
I regularly ride the same roads, with about the same effort and times on the road bike are about 70% of the hybrid times. One particular route takes me 100 minutes on the hybrid and always around 70 minutes on the Roubaix.
Given a lighter, more aero, quicker shifting, more responsive, better looking, cooler, more expensive bike I am sure I could do the course in 65 minutes. So, actually less than 5% improvement for treble the money.
I am going to buy one anyway though.

if a 10k bike goes twice as fast as a 5k bike, how much will I have to spend to break light speed?
I'm entering the Kessel run sportive this year and determined to get under 12 parsecs.
Or should I just put 25mm tyres on instead?0 -

not enough. you need 25mm on h plus son archetypes, laced onto dura ace hubs. 24r/20f. oh,and latex inners.0 -
Father Faff wrote:Hmmm - I have found that a bike that is twice as expensive goes at half the speed. My £1.5k Scott CR1 goes at approximately twice the speed of my £3k Commencal Meta 5. And I remember when I was younger I bought a bike for £500, a third of the price of the CR1 and it went approximately 3 times faster than the Scott - it was probably the Japanese technology what did it - a Honda CB175.
Could that be due to the diminishing risk of writing it off in a crash ,that goes hand in hand with a cheaper bike?Canyon Roadlite AL-Shamal Wheels-Centaur/Veloce Group

WTF! Clinchers on the Kessel run. Are you insane? Tubs all the way.0 -
You get difference in comfort and decent equipment, so gear changes better, smooth rides and aero stuff.. but In my experience I spent £6K on a Cervelo R5 and hated it, horrible to ride and couldn't wait to get rid, lost £2k when I sold it but that didn't bother me, I bought a frame for £900 and fitted the groupset, bought some nice wheels and its much much better than the R5...
Big mistake for me, but hey ho.. you learn... or do you??0 -
Serious Cat wrote:Silly question to be honest, a fat tub or skinny on a 1.8k bike will suffer or excel just as much as a fat tub or skinny on a 5k bike, its the rider and not the bike.
Well in that case then what are the practical advantages of the more expensive bicycle? A £1.2 million car is roughly 15mph faster than one costing £800,000 for example. One would think there are similar gains in bicycle price increases.0 -
The more you spend the less likely it is that someone will have your bike at the cafe stop ? Maybe that matters ?
I did see a v expensive Mclaren Venge at the cafe the other day. Bloke riding it couldnt get into his pedals as he rode off though...0 -

That depends on your definition of 'have'"You really think you can burn off sugar with exercise?" downhill paul0 -

His trainers probably didn't have cleats on them. and his ankle bracelet was probably getting in the way.0 -

Did you know .... that infamous Star Wars quote was wrong. A Parsec is a unit of distance measurement.
It like saying "I'm doing a 100mile sportive this year and hope to do it in 12 miles"

If you are riding 7 miles in 25 minutes on your £220 bike, it will take you 2 minutes and 46 seconds on a £2K bike and an amazing 1 minute and 6 seconds on a £5K bike.
AHAHAHA, THIS IS GOLDEN!!!!0 -

The line isn't wrong. Solo isn't boasting how quick his ship is, he's showing off how good a navigator he is. He can make the run in a shorter distance.
So you don't need a more expensive bike, 25mm tyres (or tubs), h plus son archetypes laced onto dura ace hubs. You need a map!
You can get my coat whilst your at it...0 -

Here's a thought....
Maybe no faster at first but as time goes on it will become faster....
Here's my thinking... Nicer bike = ride more = better fitness = faster engine = faster bike. One plays football, tennis or golf, one does not play at cycling0 -
...add a powermeter, and you'll go quicker too - must be a SRM Pro mind, £2.5k's worth of cranks is definitely going to add 20W rather than some of them cheapo Quarq jobbies ;-)Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..0

Or you could just get a free app called Strava which will make you go faster without having to pay loads for a nice bike.Commencal Meta 5.5.1

I do a certain 30 mile loop at least once or twice a week on a bianchi infinito or an 1885, my best time last year was 84 min's on the infinito. Beat it this year 83.58, but I'd upgraded the groupset to chorus from veloce. Bit the bullet and purchased a bianchi oltre the other week, and beat the time at 83.26. Dont know if this help's, but I think the infinito is a real quality bike for the price, which is less than half the price of the oltre, and does the oltre justify the extra0
