Boris spending £30m on cycling improvements

The money is being targeted at Kingston (where I live), Enfield (where I grew up) and Waltham Forest. Makes sense to target investment rather than spread it too thinly, but only if this becomes a regular investment mechanism and not just a one-off.

Has anyone seen the full plans of what is being considered? I know about the cycle towpath along the Thames in Kingston, but what else will be done with the cash?

  • It may go to provide the unemployed with free bicycles. This will aid them in their quest to find work as they cannot afford to use public transport or buy a car etc.

  • Oh man, that is dire that we are being pushed to the commuting thread. Fair play though, as it is a commuter topic.

As far as I'm concerned commuting is a different forum. kingston needs the work those paths suck.

To be fair, some of the improvements really have nothing to do with improving commuting routes eg the Kingston towpath route really isn't going to make any difference to commuters.

Completely agree the existing cycling paths in Kingston are woeful and need a lot of work. Hopefully this cash injection helps with that.

Sorting out the bit in front of the station is also a big part of what this funding will be used for - which does need looking at as it is a hard piece of road to navigate if you do not want to go to Kingston bridge (I.e. You want the ham etc. exit).

Kingston is a bit of a mess for cycling - lots of reasonable ideas badly implemented and not at all linked together.

My understanding (from discussions at a road safety course I attended last week) is that TfL are going to throw the budget at improving the most dangerous junctions rather than spreading it around the network. I don't know London well at all but understand Elephant & Castle was one of the junctions due for major alteration to be made more cycle friendly.
