Interesting reading in Rough Ride by Paul Kimmage where he describes the effects of taking amphetamine during a ride. Talk about getting a massive boot in the @rse and understanding why the riders who were taking a charge were nigh on impossible to stay with , the fact he couldn't sleep for about 12 hours after consumption was an obvious downside.This serious internet site..............I serious cat0

no added sugar vimo or orange squash. not a big fan of the High 5 tablets but i do take them in the summer when its hotter especially as i passed out doing my first century last summer when i stopped for refreshments outside Tesco Ollerton :-DCube Cross 2016

I only need ever water, dentist advised about 'sport' drinks being really bad for teeth, I don't believe the sport drink marketing and think it's simply BS. Eat healthy and stay hydrated that's all you need.0

There is some hype for sure. Basically sports drinks are a combination of water with (a) sugars and/or (b) salts/electrolytes.

The longest ride I do these days is around 4 hours, once every two weeks or so, a good breakfast to start the day and a banana and water for the ride is all I need for that, if it's really hot (30 degrees plus) I may opt to go to a LBS for a top up with a gel if I feel the signs, that is very rare. On Average I mostly do 2 hours a day during the week, a good breakfast (oats) and water works well for me.
Everyone is different and requires tweaked fuel to suit their needs, so that is important to recognise.0 -

Oh ha ha, he's dead bloody right, why don't you try and tell that to my Mam who had to pay €200 for me to get 4 fillings.
For the record, a year previously I had perfect teeth, and between perfect teeth to a quadruple fiasco, I cut out sweets and empty calories, focused on my diet, lost a stone, (6ft2, 12stone 5lbs to 11stone 5lbs so was never a fattie)
I did around 7000Kms in that time leading to an increase in the amount of isotonics I was drinking.

Look guys, drink that crap if it makes you feel good, it is mostly liquid sugar. When I raced I consumed vast amounts of this stuff ( and I brushed my teeth too ) and had real dental issues as a consequence. Now I have realised it is not needed, even for my hardest efforts.

High 5 Zero Tabs – any of Pink Grapefruit, Berry or Citrus. As the name suggests – zero sugar and zero calories, just replaces essential minerals when sweating (it's science). I used to get cramp towards the end of longer rides before I started using these tabs – but no longer.
Oh, and it's a great hangover cure after a night on the vino!0 -
Beware sports drinks and your teeth!
I have pretty bad enamel erosion which my dentist concluded was from years of using sports muck. I've never really drunk fizzy drinks etc.
The spraying action from nozzle into mouth/ over teeth doesn't help neither apparently. And the worst thing you can do is brush your teeth after your ride/ race to get rid of the solution as it apparently has a scouring effect.
Although generally not containing sugar, the drinks are highly acidic on teeth.

Depends what I'm doing but either Torq Engery, squash with Elete water electrolyte additive or just plain old water.Bikes are OK, I guess... :-)

I used a Nectar sachet on Sunday for the first time, blackcurant flavoured. It was a free-bee I got a while ago so thought I'd use it. I had that in one bottle (600ml) and another 600 ml bottle with just water in.
Not sure if it made any difference to how I felt, but it tasted ok! Going to do the same route this weekend but going to go for water in one bottle and plain old orange squash in the other. I'll see if I can feel the difference then make my mind up about whether or not it's worth it. I suspect that the squash will pretty much have the same affect!
Oh, and by the way, the squash has to be Kia-Ora, no question!
