50mm rims and 20mph winds- good or bad?

Any experience of this, race tomorrow and need to decide whether to use these (on my best bike at moment) or take the winter bike with shallow rims. Don't want to change wheels as it's a bit late and would need to change pads etc and I don't want to get up early tomorrow.

I have ridden with my Deep section rims on a bit over the last few months. Yes they can catch the wind a bit but unless you are getting really big gusts of 30mph + its not really going to be dangerous. just a little harder to keep straight. best to stay in the bunch and use others to break the air flow then you won't feel it so much.
  • Worst thing is usually gaps in hedgerows etc and gusts of wind. 20mph aint that bad tbf fair.
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles

Can cause carnage in a tight group. I'm racing at Lancaster tomorrow, no way am I taking deep rims.

Change your wheels, 10 minutes max - no big deal. I'd ride 50s in a TT with that wind but probably not a race unless it was a well protected city centre crit circuit.
  • IMO 20mph winds is not bad enough to warrant changing wheels for. The front may be a bit snatchy going past gates etc. but shouldn't be bad really.
