Hi everyone,

This is a call for anyone who has participated in charity cycling events in the UK or knows others who have done so - I am currently undertaking some research on charity cyclist motivations as part of my undergraduate dissertation and require people to complete my questionnaire. The questionnaire should only take 5-8 minutes of your time. All responses will remain anonymous and confidential, and will only be used for the purpose of this study. If possible, please pass this onto family, friends or colleagues who have also participated in charity cycling events.

Your responses are greatly appreciated and if you have any questions at all please let me know.

Thanks very much.
Katherine

Are you doing similar with a group who don't cycle in charity events asking them why they don't and what would encourage them to?

At the moment I'm focusing on identifying the key motives for why people do participate in charity rides and not why they don't or are put off from participating. However I think this is definitely something to look into in a future study.

I think you need to survey non-cyclists. By that I mean that the type of person who frequents a cycling forum will have very different reasons for riding than non-cyclists who may do a bike challenge to raise money for a charity they believe in.

I did 3 sportives last year. The amount of money two of them gave to the charities they mention in the ride brief was pitiful and the bulk of your entrance fee went to the organisers. The third was a smaller local one and this was the complete opposite. In some ways you're better off riding the course for free (i.e. not officially entering) and simply donating the full entrance fee to the charity they represent.

Obviously this is about charity events so it's focusing on fund raising etc, but personally I don't care one way or the other if it's a sportive being run for profit or an event for charity, the ride is what matters.
