Garmin confusion on the 405

I'm sure in the past I could plan a route and upload it to my watch so it warned be as i approached each turn then put a little arrow up showing me where to go. Having not used this for two years now when I try I can only get it to show the direction changes on the compass page but without a turn indicator in advance of the turn. Can anyone help?

I'm planning on www.gpsies.co.uk exporting to garmin training centre and uploading in tcx I think if that makes a difference. Not a big deal as my new 800 arrives this week but it's annoying me now! :-)
